Chhattisgarh government's Shri Dhanwantari Generic Medical Store Yojana makes quality generic medicines available to people of all age groups at 50 to 70 per cent less than the market price. The scheme, launched on 20 October 2021, now runs through 195 Dhanwantari medical stores in all 169 urban local bodies of the state.

By 2026, the scheme has given citizens a savings of more than ₹105 crore on medicines worth ₹173.63 crore. More than 60 lakh people have bought medicines at low rates from these stores, which has brought big relief to families from high treatment costs.

What is Shri Dhanwantari Generic Medical Store Yojana

Under the scheme, generic medicines from well known companies are sold at low prices. People get a discount of 50 to 70 percent on the MRP of medicines. The stores sell medicines for common problems like cold, cough, fever, blood pressure and insulin, along with medicines for serious illnesses, antibiotics and surgical items.

The scheme was launched by the Urban Administration and Development Department of Chhattisgarh government. It was started on 20 October 2021 by former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel through video conferencing from his official residence. On the first day, 84 Dhanwantari medical stores were opened across the state.

Benefits of the scheme

People get a discount of 50 to 70 percent on the MRP of generic medicines at Dhanwantari stores. Government doctors have been asked to prescribe generic medicines to patients coming to government hospitals for treatment. This has made the scheme more useful for poor families.

By 2026, the scheme has given citizens a discount of more than ₹105 crore on the sale of medicines worth ₹173.63 crore. More than 60 lakh 30 thousand citizens have bought medicines at low rates from these stores.

Implementation of the scheme

The Urban Administration and Development Department of Chhattisgarh government runs the Shri Dhanwantari Generic Medical Store Yojana. Around 195 medical stores have been opened in 169 urban areas of the state under the scheme.

These stores sell 251 types of generic medicines and 27 surgical products. Herbal products of the forest department, cosmetic items and baby food are also sold in these stores.

Need for the scheme

Rising treatment costs have become a big problem for many people. Many families fall into debt because of medical expenses. To give some relief on the cost of medicines, the state government has launched the Dhanwantari Generic Medical Store Yojana.

With the goal of universal health coverage, the state government has also started Mukhyamantri Haat Bazar Clinic Yojana to give better health services in remote areas and Mukhyamantri Shahari Slum Health Scheme in urban areas. The other mobile clinic scheme has also been started for women and adolescent girls.
