Tamil Nadu government sanctions a fresh budget every year to distribute free dhoti and saree to ration card holders ahead of Pongal, and for 2026 the state has already released ₹300 crore as the first instalment for this scheme. Thai Pongal is a harvest festival dedicated to Sun God, celebrated for four days from 14 January to 17 January as per the Tamil calendar.

More than 2.22 crore rice ration card holders across the state got this benefit during the last Pongal distribution, along with ₹3,000 cash, 1 kg raw rice, 1 kg sugar and a sugarcane as part of the Pongal gift hamper. Eligible people can also check the Pongal Gift Scheme for the cash part of this yearly package.

Tamil Nadu Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme 2026

Important features and highlights of TN Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme 2026 are given below.

  • AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran started Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme in 1983 to help poor families during Pongal.
  • Main aim of this scheme is to support poor and economically weaker families, and give more work to handloom and powerloom weavers.
  • State government procures dhotis and sarees from cooperative handloom weavers societies first, and from powerloom societies if more stock is needed.
  • Around 2.22 crore rice ration card holders get free dhoti or saree under this scheme every Pongal.
  • Handlooms Handicrafts and Textiles Department has released ₹300 crore as the first instalment for 2026, and total cost changes every year based on production and distribution needs.

Materials are moved to Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation warehouses after production, then sent out through fair price shops under the Public Distribution System. Distribution happens through ration shops, so people should keep their Smart Ration Card updated and handy during the Pongal distribution window.

Overview of Free Saree and Dhoti Scheme

How Dhoti and Saree Distribution Works

Government has made biometric authentication required at the time of distribution, so duplicate claims can be stopped. People who cannot use fingerprint verification can use iris authentication or other approved methods at the fair price shop. A state-level committee with officers from Revenue Administration, Civil Supplies and Handlooms departments watches over procurement, storage and delivery, so supplies reach ration shops before the festival.

Sri Lankan Tamils staying in camps in Tamil Nadu are also covered under this scheme, along with regular rice ration card holders in both rural and urban areas.

Need for Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme by Tamil Nadu Government

For rural families, weaving is the largest occupation after farming. To help poor families and give more work in the handloom and powerloom sector, distribution of Priceless Sarees and Dhoties was started years back.

Production and distribution of polycotton sarees and dhoties started in 2003 to give good quality material to poor families. For Pongal 2005, government extended free distribution to all people living below poverty in rural and urban areas. In 2012, this scheme was renamed as Priceless Sarees and Dhoties Scheme.
