Smart Ration Card in Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu government issues digital, Aadhaar-linked Smart Ration Cards to ration card holders across the state through TNPDS. Over 2.27 crore families in Tamil Nadu now use this card instead of the old paper ration card.

Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department, Government of Tamil Nadu manages the entire system online at tnpds.gov.in. Card holders can check application status, download the card as PDF, request corrections, and add or remove family members, all without visiting a ration office.

Check TNPDS Smart Ration Card Status Online

Status check works for new card applications, reprint requests and correction requests alike. Reference number generated at the time of application is needed for this.

STEP 1 - Visit official TNPDS website at tnpds.gov.in and look for the Application Status section on the homepage.

STEP 2 - Select the type of application, new card, reprint or correction, from the drop down menu.

STEP 3 - Enter the reference number received during application and submit the form.

STEP 4 - Portal shows the current stage of application, such as Under Process, Pending Verification, Approved or Rejected.

STEP 1 - Go to tnpds.gov.in and click on the Beneficiary tab.

STEP 2 - Log in using the registered mobile number and OTP.

STEP 3 - Click on Smart Card Print option and select the preferred language.

STEP 4 - Save the card as PDF or take a print out for use at the Fair Price Shop.

Types of Smart Ration Cards in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu issues six types of Smart Ration Cards, based on family income and category. Type of card decides what commodities and how much quantity a family can get every month from Fair Price Shops.

  • PHH (Priority Household) - for BPL families whose income falls below the state poverty line, gets subsidised rice and other items every month.
  • PHH-AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) - meant for the poorest households, gives the highest quantity of subsidised grains.
  • NPHH (Non-Priority Household) - for APL families with annual income above ₹1 lakh, gets limited items at market-linked rates.
  • NPHH-S (Sugar Card) - issued to families who need only the sugar quota through PDS.
  • NPHH-NC (No Commodity Card) - works only as identity proof, no commodities issued against it.

Eligibility for Smart Ration Card

Applicant must be an Indian citizen and Tamil Nadu resident. Family should not already hold a ration card issued by another state. Farmers owning more than five acres of land do not qualify under the PHH category. Total yearly family income decides which card type gets issued.

Details on the smart card, such as address, family member names or mobile number, can be corrected anytime online.

About Smart Ration Card Scheme

Smart Ration Card scheme in Tamil Nadu was announced in 2012 to make Public Distribution System fully digital. Over the years, government replaced almost all paper ration cards in the state with smart cards, and today it works as the standard ration card system across Tamil Nadu. State government spends around ₹5,500 crore every year as food subsidy under the scheme.
