PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the central government's main rooftop solar scheme. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is accepting application forms for rooftop solar connections under this scheme, which offers a direct subsidy of up to ₹78,000 to residential households. Eligible people can install solar panels on their rooftops and get up to 300 units of free electricity every month.
This scheme was earlier announced as Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2024, right after the Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. It was later launched as PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana on 13 February 2024 and approved by the Union Cabinet on 29 February 2024. The scheme targets rooftop solar installation on 1 crore households across the country, which will add about 30 GW of rooftop solar capacity.
By 21 October 2026, the scheme crossed 63 lakh beneficiary households with 50,99,781 rooftop solar installations and 17,855 MW of installed residential rooftop solar capacity. More than ₹33,642 crore has been released as subsidy. MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said on 15 September 2026 that the scheme is likely to cover 85-90 lakh households by March 2027, just short of the 1 crore target. On 23 October 2026, the Solar Energy Corporation of India signed an MoU with the Ministry of Home Affairs to install grid-connected rooftop solar systems on MHA buildings across the country under the scheme. The scheme has an outlay of ₹75,021 crore and is being implemented till FY 2026-27.

Benefits of PM Surya Ghar Yojana
People who install rooftop solar connections under this scheme get several benefits from the central government.
- Central subsidy: All residential households who install solar connections can get a direct subsidy of up to ₹78,000. The subsidy is paid directly to the consumer's bank account after installation and verification.
- Free electricity: Households can get up to 300 units of free electricity every month by generating their own solar power and using net metering.
- Collateral-free loan: To install rooftop solar connections, people can get collateral-free loans of up to ₹2 lakh from banks at a subsidized rate. On 9 October 2026, the Finance Ministry asked all banks to cut the loan processing time under the scheme to under 10 days. At present it takes 17 days at public banks and 19 days at private banks.
- State top-up: Some states add support on top of the central subsidy. On 21 October 2026, the Gujarat Cabinet approved an extra ₹1,000 crore for rooftop solar systems up to 2 kW installed under this scheme. A general category household now pays only 10 percent of the benchmark cost and an SC or ST household pays 5 percent. The state expects to cover more than 3 lakh households.
Installation of solar rooftops helps people generate their own power using the energy from the sun. This reduces their electricity bills. If the generated energy is more than what is needed, the excess power can be sold to the DISCOM at a notified tariff, which acts as a regular source of income. Rooftop solar also reduces pollution and supports a clean energy future for the country.
