What is PMJAY Ayushman Bharat Scheme?

Ayushman Bharat PMJAY is one of the biggest government-funded health insurance schemes in the world. It was launched in September 2018 to help poor and lower-income families pay for hospital treatment without spending their own money. The scheme covers secondary and tertiary hospitalizations at both public and private empanelled hospitals in a completely cashless and paperless manner.

As of 2026, the scheme covers 1,961 medical procedures across 27 different specialties, including super speciality care like neurosurgery, oncology, and cardiac surgery. There is no cap on family size or number of members, and newborn children are automatically covered if the parents are PMJAY beneficiaries.

A big update in 2026 is that PMJAY is now available in all 36 states and union territories. West Bengal, which had its own state scheme earlier, officially joined Ayushman Bharat in May 2026. This means families across every corner of India can now access this scheme.

Senior Citizens Benefit - Ayushman Vay Vandana Card

All Indian citizens aged 70 years and above are eligible for a special benefit under PMJAY called the AB-PMJAY Vay Vandana, launched in October 2024. Senior citizens in this age group get an additional top-up health cover of ₹5 lakh per year, on top of any existing PMJAY family coverage. This benefit applies regardless of the family's income level - even if the senior citizen is not from a poor family, they can still get this cover if they are 70 or above.

To get the senior citizen card, go to beneficiary.nha.gov.in, click on the "AB PMJAY Vay Vandana" tab, and complete the e-KYC using your Aadhaar OTP, fingerprint, or face capture. The card is usually ready within 15 minutes. You can also visit any Common Service Centre (CSC) for assisted registration for a nominal fee of ₹30.

How to Download Ayushman Bharat Card Online

STEP 1 - Log in to beneficiary.nha.gov.in using your mobile number and OTP, following the steps mentioned above.

STEP 2 - After logging in, your beneficiary dashboard will show your name and family members listed under the scheme. If you are eligible, a download icon will appear next to your name.

STEP 3 - Click the download icon to get a PDF copy of your Ayushman Bharat card. You can also install the Ayushman Bharat app on your Android or iPhone and download the card from there by going to "My Card" section.

Documents Required

Before checking your name on the PMJAY beneficiary list or applying for the card, keep these documents handy. Aadhaar is the most important one:

  • Aadhaar Card - This is required for identity verification and e-KYC. Make sure your Aadhaar is linked to your mobile number for OTP-based authentication.
  • Mobile Number - Should ideally be the one linked to your Aadhaar to receive OTP for login.
  • Ration Card - Helpful for SECC eligibility lookup, especially for rural families.
  • Other address proofs - Electricity bill or PAN card can also help if needed during assisted registration at a CSC.

How to Find Empanelled Hospitals Near You

With over 36,000 hospitals now empanelled under PMJAY, you can find a hospital near you using the official hospital locator. Here is how:

STEP 1 - Open the Ayushman Bharat app on your phone or go to pmjay.gov.in and click on "Find Hospital".

STEP 2 - Select your state, district, specialty, and hospital type (government or private) from the dropdown menus.

STEP 3 - Click "Search" to see the list of hospitals. The results show both public and private hospitals along with their contact details.

When you visit an empanelled hospital, go directly to the Ayushman Mitra desk - every empanelled hospital has one. Show your Ayushman card (physical or digital) and your Aadhaar. The hospital will do biometric verification and open a cashless claim for your treatment. If any hospital tries to charge you for a covered treatment, call 14555 immediately or raise a complaint via the Mera-PMJAY option in the app.

What Treatments Are Covered Under PMJAY?

PMJAY covers a very wide range of medical treatments. Here are the main categories of expenses covered under the scheme:

  • Hospitalization costs - Room charges, doctor consultation fees, nursing charges, and ICU costs during the hospital stay.
  • Medicines and consumables - All medicines, surgical items, and consumables used during treatment are covered.
  • Diagnostic tests - Lab tests, X-rays, CT scans, MRI, and other diagnostic procedures needed before, during, or after the surgery.
  • Pre and post hospitalization - Treatment costs for 3 days before admission and 15 days after discharge are also covered.
  • Day-care procedures - Some treatments that don't need overnight hospital stay are also covered as day-care packages.

Pre-existing conditions are covered from Day 1 itself - there is no waiting period at all under PMJAY. This is one of the biggest advantages over private health insurance policies.
