Free Uniforms for Students - Introduction
Free Uniforms for Students helps children continue their schooling by removing the money burden of buying school dresses. The scheme supports regular attendance and helps bring down dropout numbers across Madhya Pradesh.
School Education Department manages this scheme for all government primary and middle school students. Since its start on 1 July 2004, the scheme has given very important support to children in both rural and urban areas. Earlier, the department used to transfer 600 rupees to the student's account for two dresses. Now the government will directly give stitched uniforms to the students.
Around 52 lakh students across the state are covered under this scheme every year, and each student gets two sets of uniforms for the academic year.

2026 Update: Ready-Made Uniforms Replacing 600 Rupees Allowance
On 2 June 2026, the Madhya Pradesh cabinet led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav approved the distribution of ready-made stitched uniforms to students of Classes 1 to 8 in government schools. This decision replaces the old system where 600 rupees was transferred to the student or parent's bank account to buy fabric. The government found that rural students could not get good quality cloth in villages, and stitching arrangements were also not available there.
Under the new system, the government will invite tenders from the garment industry and entrepreneurs to supply uniforms in different sizes. Around 52 lakh students, about 25.32 lakh boys and 26.70 lakh girls, will get two sets of uniforms each, which means roughly 1.40 crore uniforms in total. The state government plans to spend about 350 crore rupees on this work. The Madhya Pradesh Pustak Nigam (Textbook Corporation) is handling the tender process.
The tender work is taking time. On 15 July 2026, the Madhya Pradesh High Court stayed the 350 crore rupee uniform tender after the Jabalpur Apparel Innovation and Manufacturing Association (JAIMA) filed a petition saying the eligibility conditions in the tender left out local industries, MSMEs and self-help groups. The court asked the state government to file its reply within a week and said the tender will not be finalised till then. Because of this delay, officials say students may get their uniforms by October, November or December 2026.
Benefits
Every eligible boy and girl student gets two sets of ready-made stitched uniforms for the academic year. Earlier the benefit was given as a 600 rupee cash transfer, but from the 2026-27 session the government is moving to direct supply of stitched uniforms through the garment industry.
Eligibility
To receive the benefit of this scheme, you should meet the following criteria:
- You should be a student enrolled in a government primary or middle school in Madhya Pradesh.
- You should be studying in any class from Class 1 to Class 8.
- You should complete your school enrollment before 15 August of the current academic year.
Example: If Ravi is in Class 5 at a government school in Bhopal, he is eligible as long as he joins the school before the mid-August deadline.
Application Process
There is no separate application form for this scheme. Eligible students enrolled in government schools are automatically included in the scheme. The school office keeps the enrollment details, and the uniforms are distributed through the school after the tender supply is complete. You do not need to pay any fee or visit any office for this.
