Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme is a Tamil Nadu government scheme that gives Rs. 1,000 every month to women who are the head of their family. Tamilnadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the scheme on 15 September 2023 from Kancheepuram, the hometown of DMK founder CN Annadurai. The money is sent directly to the bank account of every eligible woman through the DBT system.
The scheme is still running and the government has made it clear that it will continue without any break. In the Tamil Nadu interim budget for 2026-27, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu said the scheme values the unpaid work of women and has become a model for the whole country. He also said that stopping the scheme would lead to unrest in the State.
Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme Latest Update 2026
There are a few important updates for 2026. The beneficiaries recently received Rs. 5,000 in their bank accounts. This amount included Rs. 3,000 as an advance for three months of support and an extra one-time summer relief of Rs. 2,000.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has also announced that the monthly amount will be raised to Rs. 2,000 in the next term of the DMK government. This was part of the party's manifesto for the 2026 State assembly elections. The scheme now covers more than 1.3 crore women across Tamil Nadu.
Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme Objectives
The scheme has two main aims. First, it gives proper appreciation to the work that women do for their families without any rest for their whole life. Second, the yearly entitlement of Rs. 12,000 is meant to improve the livelihood of women, raise their standard of living, and help them live with self-respect in society.
The scheme is named after the late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, who was also known as Kalaignar, which means an artist of eminence. The Tamil Nadu government had set aside Rs. 7,000 crore for the scheme in its first year.
