Tamil Nadu government has launched its Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme 2026 and started online applications on the TNEB Unified Solar Rooftop Portal from 21 September 2026. Domestic electricity consumers can now apply at tnebltd.gov.in/usrp and get up to ₹22,000 from the state, on top of the central subsidy of up to ₹78,000.

Electricity Minister R Nirmalkumar launched the scheme at the TNEB headquarters in Chennai. It runs alongside PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, so a 3 kW home system can now get a total subsidy of ₹1 lakh. On the portal, the scheme also goes by the name Tamil Nadu Solar Acceleration Scheme, or Nam Veedu Solar Veedu.

STEP 3 - Enter the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with your electricity connection.

STEP 4 - Check the connection details that show up, fill the rest of the form and submit it. Note down the application number.

STEP 5 - Get the system fitted by an empanelled vendor. The vendor list is on the PM Surya Ghar portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in.

STEP 6 - After installation, go to "Net meter Agreement, Plant photo, DCR Details-Upload" under the same menu and upload the signed net meter agreement, a photo of the plant and the DCR panel details. The net meter gets fitted after inspection, and the subsidy follows.

Already applied on the PM Surya Ghar national portal? Use the "Applicant details Updation from PMSGY Scheme" option on the same menu instead of making a fresh application. You can track any application under "Application Status" with either the application number or your mobile number.

How much subsidy you get

State money comes in three slabs based on the system size. Here is how it adds up with the central amount.

System sizeCentral subsidyTamil Nadu subsidyTotal
1 kW₹30,000₹5,000₹35,000
2 kW₹60,000₹10,000₹70,000
3 kW and above₹78,000₹22,000₹1,00,000

Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) pays the state share by DBT into your bank account. Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) handles coordination and monitoring. The government has sanctioned ₹50 crore and wants rooftop solar on at least one lakh homes by March 2027.

Who can apply

The subsidy is only for homes. Shops, offices and factories can still fit solar through the portal's non-subsidy option, but they get no money back.

  • You need a TNPDCL electricity connection under the domestic or domestic common services category.
  • The system must be grid-connected with a net meter. Off-grid systems do not qualify.
  • Panels must be made in India and meet DCR rules, since the portal asks for DCR details before the net meter is fitted.
  • Installation has to be done by a vendor on the empanelled list.

A 1 kW system needs roughly 10 square metres of roof with no shade, as per the portal FAQ. Systems up to 3 kW skip the feasibility check.

Solar Subsidy Calculator

TNEB has also launched a calculator at https://www.tnebltd.gov.in/usrp/solarcalc.xhtml. Pick your district from the 38 listed, enter your average monthly EB units and choose a system size between 1 kW and 10 kW. It then shows the cost after subsidy, monthly units generated, payback period and a rough 25-year saving. Real output depends on your roof direction and shade.
