Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) is a central government scheme under Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. It is implemented as a component of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) to promote farm mechanization across all states. The revised SMAM operational guidelines for 2026 were released in August 2026 and can be downloaded in PDF format at agrimachinery.nic.in.
SMAM helps farmers buy modern farm machinery and equipment with a subsidy. The scheme aims to increase the ratio of farm power to cultivable unit area up to 2.5 kW per hectare and extend the benefits of mechanization to small and marginal farmers, women farmers and farmers in low mechanized regions.
SMAM Scheme 2026
Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization has the following main aims:
- Increasing the reach of farm mechanization to small and marginal farmers and to the regions where availability of farm power is low;
- Promoting Custom Hiring Centres to offset the adverse effects of scale arising due to small farm size and high cost of individual ownership;
- Creating hubs for hi-tech and high value farm equipment;
- Creating awareness among stakeholders through demonstration and training activities;
- Making sure of performance testing and certification at designated testing centers located all over the country.
SMAM Subsidy Details
Under SMAM, money support is given to farmers for buying farm machinery on individual ownership basis. The subsidy rate depends on the category of the farmer.
- Small and marginal farmers, SC and ST farmers, women farmers and farmers of North Eastern and Himalayan states get 50% of the machine cost as subsidy.
- All other farmers get 40% of the machine cost as subsidy.
- FRA (Forest Rights Act) patta holders get 90% of the machine cost as subsidy.
For Custom Hiring Centres, the subsidy is given at 40% of the project cost for projects costing up to ₹250 lakh. For Kisan Drone Custom Hiring Centres, agriculture graduates get 50% of the basic cost of the drone and its attachments or up to ₹5 lakh, whichever is less. The funds sharing pattern between Centre and States is 60:40 for normal states, 90:10 for North Eastern and Himalayan states and 100:0 for Union Territories.
