West Bengal Freeship Scheme (WBFS) offers tuition fee waivers for undergraduate students pursuing professional courses in engineering, technology, pharmacy, and architecture at private self-financing institutions across the state. The government introduced this support system in 2011 through the Department of Higher Education to help meritorious students from low-income families afford quality technical education. For the 2025-26 academic year, online applications opened on 25 May 2026 and the last date to apply is 31 July 2026.
Under this scheme, eligible students receive a full waiver of their tuition fees. Other college charges like examination fees, library fees, and hostel costs must be paid by the student separately. The benefit applies only to tuition expenses, making it easier for deserving candidates to continue their studies without financial stress.
West Bengal Freeship Scheme 2026
The scheme targets students who have secured merit ranks in state or national level entrance examinations such as JEE Main, WBJEE, or NEET. Candidates must be permanent residents of West Bengal and come from families with an annual income below ₹2.50 lakh. This ensures that the financial assistance reaches those who genuinely need it.
Students already receiving benefits under the AICTE Tuition Fee Waiver (TFW) Scheme or the West Bengal Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship cannot apply under WBFS. The government has made this rule to prevent double benefits and ensure wider coverage among eligible students.
