Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 is a social welfare scheme by the Government of India that helps poor women get free LPG connections. The scheme makes clean cooking fuel available to rural and deprived households, replacing traditional and health-hazardous fuels like firewood and coal. As on 23 September 2026, over 10.57 crore LPG connections have been released under the scheme. New domestic LPG connections are on hold after the global LPG crisis, and in October 2026 the Karnataka government asked the Centre to release them as about 36,000 applications were pending in the state as of August.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 - Introduction

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 is run by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG) to improve the lives of women in India. The scheme gives free LPG connections to adult women from poor households, building on the original 2016 scheme to make sure clean cooking energy reaches every corner of the country.

By replacing firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes with LPG, the scheme protects the health of rural women and also helps the environment. The original Ujjwala target of 8 crore connections was met in September 2019. Ujjwala 2.0 was then launched in August 2021, and the government has kept adding new connections in phases. For the financial year 2025-26, the government approved 25 lakh additional deposit-free connections, taking the total reach to 10.58 crore families. As on 23 September 2026, about 24.85 lakh of these new connections had already been released.

Benefits

Through Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0, the government provides a deposit-free LPG connection so that clean cooking becomes affordable for poor families. The connection covers the security deposit of the cylinder, pressure regulator, suraksha hose, Domestic Gas Consumer Card booklet, and installation charges. The breakdown of support is given below:

Benefit Item Amount (14.2 kg Cylinder) Amount (5 kg Cylinder)
Security Deposit ₹1250 ₹800
Pressure Regulator ₹150 ₹150
LPG Hose ₹100 ₹100
Gas Consumer Card ₹25 ₹25
Installation and Demonstration ₹75 ₹75
Total Cash Support ₹1600 ₹1150

Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) also provide the first LPG refill and a gas stove (hotplate) completely free of cost. Beneficiaries can choose a 14.2 kg single bottle connection, a 5 kg single bottle connection, or a 5 kg double bottle connection. In the latest extension, the government has approved ₹2,050 per connection for the new deposit-free connections.

Eligible households also get a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder on the first 4 refills in a year from the financial year 2026-27. Earlier, the subsidy was available on up to 9 refills. This subsidy is proportionately reduced for 5 kg cylinders, and it is credited directly to the beneficiary account to bring down the cost of every refill.

Eligibility

To get benefit from Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0, an applicant must be an adult woman aged 18 years or above. Her household should not already have an LPG connection from any Oil Marketing Company. She must belong to a poor household and submit a deprivation declaration in the prescribed format. The following points explain who can apply:

  • Adult women from poor households who do not have any existing LPG connection in the family can apply.
  • Applicants belonging to identified categories such as SC or ST households, beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), Most Backward Classes, Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families, tea and ex-tea garden tribes, forest dwellers, and people living on islands and river islands are covered.
  • Poor households as per the SECC data or the 14-point deprivation declaration can also apply, including migrant families who submit a self-declaration as per the prescribed annexure.

For example, if Sunita, a forest dweller living in a remote area, meets the age and identity requirements, she becomes eligible for a new connection even if she does not have a formal BPL card, provided she submits the required deprivation declaration.
