Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a Central government scheme run by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. It gives deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from poor households so that families can shift from firewood, coal and cow-dung cakes to clean cooking fuel. As of 5 August 2026, more than 10.57 crore connections have been released under the scheme and new applications are open on the official portal pmuy.gov.in.

In September 2025, the government approved 25 lakh additional deposit-free LPG connections under PMUY during the 2025-26 financial year. That raised the total target to 10.58 crore connections with an approved spending of ₹676 crore. Around 24.8 lakh of these freshly approved connections had already been released by early August 2026.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana - Introduction

PM Modi launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana on 1 May 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. The scheme was made for rural and poor families that used smoky traditional cooking fuels. It helps women cook in a cleaner kitchen, saves 2 to 3 hours a day that earlier went into collecting firewood, and cuts indoor air pollution.

The scheme crossed its first big target of 8 crore connections in September 2019. Ujjwala 2.0 began in August 2021 with 1 crore more connections and that target was met by January 2022. The reach grew further, and by July 2025 more than 10.33 crore connections were active. The latest phase, often called Ujjwala 3.0 in news reports, is releasing the 25 lakh freshly approved connections.

Benefits

When you apply under PMUY, you get a deposit-free LPG connection. The financial support given by the government for the connection is ₹1,600 for a 14.2 kg cylinder and ₹1,150 for a 5 kg cylinder. This cash support covers the security deposit of the cylinder, pressure regulator, suraksha hose, domestic gas consumer card and installation charges.

The first refill and a hot plate (stove) are also given free. You can select a 14.2 kg single bottle, a 5 kg single bottle or a 5 kg double bottle connection. During the 2025-26 financial year, the Union Cabinet approved a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 9 refills a year for eligible PMUY households, with a lower amount for 5 kg cylinders, at an outlay of ₹12,000 crore.

Eligibility

An adult woman can apply if she is 18 years or older, does not already have an LPG connection in the same household and belongs to a poor household. The connection is issued in the name of the woman applicant. Check the points given below:

• Age and name: The applicant must be a woman who has completed 18 years of age, and the LPG connection is released in her name.
• No existing connection: There should be no other LPG connection from any oil marketing company within the same household.
• Poor household groups: Families in the SECC 2011 list, SC or ST households, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana eligible people, Antyodaya Anna Yojana households, forest dwellers, most backward classes, tea garden tribes and people living on river islands are covered.
• Self-declaration option: If you do not come under the groups above, you can still apply as a poor household by submitting a 14-point self-declaration along with the deprivation declaration.

Exclusions

Male members of a household cannot apply for this scheme. Also, a household that already has any LPG connection from an oil marketing company is not eligible for a fresh connection under PMUY.

Application Process

Applications are accepted online on the official PMUY portal and also through any LPG distributor of Indane, Bharatgas or HP Gas. Every application goes through system-driven de-duplication checks and physical verification before the connection is released. New and pending applications now need e-KYC based on Aadhaar as part of the revised process. Follow the steps below:

STEP 1 - Keep your documents ready: Aadhaar card, ration card or family certificate, address proof, bank passbook or cancelled cheque, passport size photo and a signed declaration.

STEP 2 - Visit the official PMUY portal at pmuy.gov.in/Ujjwala2.html or go directly to your nearest LPG distributor.

STEP 3 - Select your preferred oil marketing company: Indane, Bharatgas or HP Gas.

STEP 4 - Choose the type of connection as a new PMUY (Ujjwala) connection.

STEP 5 - Select your state, district and local LPG distributor or agency.

STEP 6 - Enter your mobile number and verify it with the OTP sent to your phone.

STEP 7 - If you are a migrant family or do not have a ration card or family identifier, fill out and upload Annexure I self-declaration.

STEP 8 - Enter your family, personal and bank details carefully, choose your cylinder type (14.2 kg, 5 kg single or 5 kg double) and submit the declaration.

STEP 9 - Complete e-KYC using Aadhaar as required for new and pending applications.

STEP 10 - Once you generate your reference number, visit your selected gas agency or wait for the physical verification. After the subscription voucher is issued, the connection is installed at your home.

Keep the following documents ready for a smooth application:

• A valid photo identity, generally Aadhaar card of the applicant.
• Ration card issued by the state or any government document certifying family composition, or Annexure I self-declaration for migrant applicants.
• Address proof, only in case the address on Aadhaar is different from the current residence.
• Aadhaar copies of the applicant and adult family members shown in the family document.
• Correct bank account details through bank passbook copy or cancelled cheque.
• Deprivation declaration in the prescribed format and recent passport size photographs.

Can I transfer my mother-in-law's existing PMUY connection if we move to a city together?

Yes, you can request a transfer of the PMUY connection. The service for changing the registered address is available through the distributor or the online portal.

Are the stove and the first gas refill provided free?

Yes, the first refill and the hot plate are given free to eligible people. No payment is required for the connection, the first refill or the stove.

Can I opt for a 5 kg cylinder?
