Andhra Pradesh government's Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Vidyarthi Mitra scheme, earlier known as Jagananna Vidya Kanuka, provides free school kits to students of classes 1 to 10 in government and government-aided schools. Under this scheme, the state government supplies every eligible student with textbooks, notebooks, uniforms, shoes, socks, a belt and a school bag.
For the 2026-27 academic year, the government has released Rs. 830 crore to cover the procurement and supply of these student kits. The kits are handed over to students on the first day of school, so that no child or their parents have to arrange books and uniforms on their own.
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Vidyarthi Mitra Scheme 2026
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Vidyarthi Mitra is the new name of the earlier Jagananna Vidya Kanuka scheme. The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, renamed the scheme in July 2024 to honor Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India's second president and a well known scholar and teacher.
The scheme was first launched on 8th October 2020 as Jagananna Vidya Kanuka by former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. It was started so that students of government schools could focus fully on their studies without worrying about the cost of study material.
Under the scheme, each student gets three pairs of uniform cloth, textbooks, notebooks, a pair of shoes, two pairs of socks, a belt and a school bag. The cost of stitching the uniforms is also sent directly to the bank accounts of mothers who send their children to school.
