Swasthya Sathi is being phased out and replaced by the Mukhyamantri Swasthya Bima Yojana (MMSBY). West Bengal rolled out Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and MMSBY on 16 August 2026, giving residents who are not eligible for Ayushman Bharat cashless cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year. A multispeciality hospital in south Kolkata that was handling around 30 such patients daily, mostly for cardiac care, has shut its doors to all but critical cases.

Woodlands Hospital has restricted coverage to cardiac and some cancer patients only. The hospital's CEO Rupak Barua, who is also president of the Association of Hospitals of Eastern India, said that issues with reimbursement rates under the scheme are forcing most hospitals to restrict admissions. Ruby General Hospital, however, has not stopped admissions and was still getting claim approvals from the insurance company as of May 8, 2026. Ruby handles more than 200 Swasthya Sathi patients in a month.

The uncertainty over whether Swasthya Sathi would continue is now settled, as the state has moved to MMSBY and Ayushman Bharat. Private hospitals, however, still say the reimbursement rates under the old scheme were not profitable, and some have raised concerns about the new rates. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has said the government will look into these concerns and work with private hospitals so that treatment is not disrupted.

What this means for beneficiaries: Existing Swasthya Sathi cardholders are being moved to Ayushman Bharat or MMSBY based on eligibility. Those not eligible for Ayushman Bharat get MMSBY cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year at Ayushman Bharat empanelled hospitals across India. The MMSBY KYC process has started.
