Swasthya Sathi Scheme is active and enrolled families can use their cards for cashless treatment, but there is an important development to know about right now. Several private hospitals in Kolkata have started refusing or restricting admissions for Swasthya Sathi cardholders as the state waits for a new government to take charge after BJP won the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026.
At least one large hospital chain on EM Bypass that treated over 250 Swasthya Sathi patients every month has stopped admissions fully across all its units. A multispeciality hospital in south Kolkata that was handling around 30 such patients daily, mostly for cardiac care, has shut its doors to all but critical cases.
Woodlands Hospital has restricted coverage to cardiac and some cancer patients only. The hospital's CEO Rupak Barua, who is also president of the Association of Hospitals of Eastern India, said that issues with reimbursement rates under the scheme are forcing most hospitals to restrict admissions. Ruby General Hospital, however, has not stopped admissions and was still getting claim approvals from the insurance company as of May 8, 2026. Ruby handles more than 200 Swasthya Sathi patients in a month.
The main reason hospitals are holding back is uncertainty about whether the incoming BJP government will continue Swasthya Sathi or replace it with the Centre's Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme. Hospitals also say the scheme's reimbursement rates were never profitable for private facilities. Most hospitals say the suspension of admissions is unofficial and they are waiting for a clear directive from the new state government once it assumes office.
What this means for beneficiaries: If you are a Swasthya Sathi cardholder in Kolkata and a private hospital turns you away, try contacting the scheme's helpline or approach a government hospital. The situation may change once the new government announces its position. Keep checking swasthyasathi.gov.in for any official updates.
