Salient Features of Digi Gaon Project - Digital Village Scheme

Digital Village Project is a multipurpose scheme of the Central Government for the development of villages and to make them self sustainable. This scheme creates an income source for rural people and promotes awareness about digital services. The key features of the scheme are given below.

• Wi-Fi Choupals provide low cost internet in rural areas. These also let citizens become entrepreneurs and set up cottage industries for candle sticks, sanitary napkins, LED bulbs and health service units.
• Common Service Centers are the strategic main part of the Digital India Scheme and serve as access points for delivering digital services. These Centres also help people enroll with IGNOU and NIOS distance learning programmes. The network has grown to over 5.4 lakh VLEs, of which 4.35 lakh operate at gram panchayat level.
• Digi Gaon Scheme promotes rural entrepreneurship, training and livelihood with community participation. New digital villages are covered with solar lighting in community centers, energy efficient LED assembly units and sanitary napkin units with the help of Asha and Anganwadi workers.
