Supporting Community Radio Movement in India is a central government scheme run by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to help local community-based organizations set up and run community radio stations (CRS). Community radio focuses on local needs and interests, and works differently from Akashwani and private FM stations. These are low power FM stations with a maximum effective radiated power (ERP) of 100 watts, and they cover about a 10 to 15 kilometer radius, which makes them perfect for hyper-local impact. Whether you are an educational institution, a Krishi Vigyan Kendra, or an NGO, this scheme invites you to represent the voices of your neighbours well.

The government first brought this policy in 2002 for educational institutions and later expanded it to include non-profit organizations and civil society groups in 2006. The scheme was extended for the 2021-2026 period with an outlay of ₹50 crores, and now the government has approved a further extension for 2026-27 to 2030-31 with the same outlay of ₹50 crores. As of 2026, there are 540 commissioned community radio stations across the country making a difference nationwide.

This scheme actively encourages community-focused groups to come forward and launch radio stations that serve the public interest. Once the licensee makes the community radio station operational, the government provides financial support to keep the project going and to help it grow.

New community radio stations can get financial support between ₹15.60 lakhs and ₹21.00 lakhs in states other than the North East, and between ₹18.20 lakhs and ₹24 lakhs in the North East region, for setting up stations with a special focus on green energy (solar) and women participation. Existing stations that have been operating for over five years can get up to ₹10.50 lakhs (other than North East) and up to ₹11.10 lakhs (North East) for renewing or replacing old equipment. An emergency grant of up to ₹11.50 lakhs is also given in extreme situations like natural calamities, lightning, or cyclones to cover damage caused to community radio stations.

The government also supports the movement through training and awareness workshops, webinars, and sammelans, and through regional and national events that allow peer learning among community radio stakeholders.

Eligibility

1. You should be explicitly constituted as a non-profit organization with at least three years of documented service to your local community.
2. Your community radio station should be designed to serve a specific, well-defined local area.
3. You must maintain an ownership and management structure that reflects the community you represent.
4. Your broadcast programs should focus on the educational, developmental, social, and cultural needs of your residents.
5. You must be a legally registered entity, such as a society or a public charitable trust.
6. If you are an NGO or trust, you should be registered on the NITI Aayog NGO Darpan portal and provide your Unique ID during the application process.
7. For financial support, your station should have completed at least three months of regular broadcasting after receiving its license.

Exclusions

Please note that this is not a general grant for all organizations. This scheme strictly supports only those entities that have already been granted a formal license to operate a community radio station by the Government of India.
