Promotion of Energy Audit and Conservation of Energy (PEACE): Detailed Energy Audit supports micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Tamil Nadu to improve their energy efficiency. Under this scheme, the Tamil Nadu government reimburses 50% of the cost of conducting a professional energy audit, subject to a maximum of ₹75,000 per audit per unit. The scheme helps manufacturing businesses find out where energy is being wasted and adopt measures to cut their energy bills and their effect on the environment.
MSME Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu runs the PEACE scheme through the official portal msmeonline.tn.gov.in. Registration and online application remain open for eligible manufacturing units throughout the 2026-27 financial year. A unit must file its claim within one year from the date the energy audit is completed.
Promotion of Energy Audit and Conservation of Energy (PEACE): Detailed Energy Audit
This scheme is part of the larger PEACE programme, which has four main parts: an awareness programme, a training programme, a detailed energy audit, and implementation of the audit recommendations. The Detailed Energy Audit component focuses on studying how a unit uses energy and where the waste is happening.
A detailed energy audit helps a business spot its main energy sources, point out lapses in energy usage, find areas where usage can be improved, and decide the level of consumption of each energy source. At the end of the exercise, the auditor gives clear recommendations that can improve energy savings in the industry.
Methodology
The audit follows a clear process that starts with a study of the plant and ends with a final report. The main steps covered in the audit are given below.
- Complete a plant survey and discuss operations with plant personnel to understand how energy is being used on the floor.
- Analyze historical performance data, measure all required electrical parameters, and assess the energy performance of significant electrical and thermal equipment.
- Compare the findings with the manufacturer design data and identify specific energy conservation measures.
- Review the findings and recommendations with the unit, perform a detailed techno-economic analysis, and finally submit the completed audit report.
Energy Audit Team
The audit must be carried out only by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) empanelled auditing firms or companies, whose audit teams are led by BEE accredited energy auditors. BEE accredited individual energy auditors can also be engaged. Only these qualified auditors can carry out the work under this scheme.
Energy Audit Final Report
The final report should be complete and practical so that the unit can act on it easily. The report must carry the details listed below.
- Specific and actionable recommendations, quantitative and qualitative analysis, the projected cost savings, and the expected payback period for each measure.
- An executive summary, the audit timeline, and clear final conclusions that the unit and the department can review.

Benefits
A qualifying manufacturing MSME can claim 50% of the total cost of the energy audit, up to a maximum of ₹75,000 per energy audit per unit. The reimbursement is a direct cash support to the unit.
Important conditions apply. The government releases the subsidy to the MSME unit only after a certified energy audit report is submitted and verified. If a loan was taken to cover the audit costs, the subsidy is sent directly to the bank to adjust against the loan account. The subsidy ceiling applies separately to the original audit and to any later audit, which must be taken at least three years after the earlier one. Enterprises with more than one unit can claim the benefit separately for each unit. Only the professional charges of conducting the energy audit are eligible for subsidy.
Eligibility
To qualify, a unit must be an existing manufacturing MSME in Tamil Nadu. The scheme is open for the first energy audit and for later audits taken after a gap of at least three years. A unit that has already availed a subsidy for an energy audit from the state or central government is not eligible to apply again. If a business runs multiple units, it can apply for this subsidy separately for each unit, provided each unit files its claim within one year of completing its audit.
Documents
Applicants need to keep the following documents ready in PDF format. Each file should be kept small, preferably under 200 kb, and every document must be correct before upload.
- Copy of Udyog Aadhaar or Udyam certificate and proof of business registration such as a partnership deed, LLP registration, or incorporation certificate.
- EB meter card or online statement as proof of connected load, plus proof of alternate energy usage if any alternate source is used.
