Central government issues Pashu Aadhar Card to cows, buffaloes and other livestock under National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM). Pashu Aadhar is a 12-digit bar-coded ear tag that works like Aadhaar for animals. Till November 2025, more than 35.68 crore animals have been issued Pashu Aadhaar under this mission.
Pashu Aadhar number carries all details of the animal, including breed, pedigree, vaccination, treatment and milk production. The scheme now runs through Bharat Pashudhan, the unified digital livestock ecosystem built by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) with Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD). This article explains how to apply online for Pashu Aadhar ID and check its status at the official portal.
About Pashu Aadhar Card
Pashu Aadhaar helps expand dairy sector in India. NDDB developed Information Network for Animal Productivity and Health (INAPH) for this work, and the same unique identification system now continues under NDLM. Every animal gets an ear tag with a bar-coded 12-digit unique identification number. The database records breeding, artificial insemination, health services, vaccination and treatment, with over 84 crore transactions logged so far.
Establishing Pashu Aadhaar was first proposed in 2015 by a government committee to prevent cattle smuggling. The recommendation came after a Supreme Court order on a plea against cattle trafficking. In the first phase, the government planned to cover productive "in milk" female cow and buffalo population, and later other bovines such as calves, males and strays. Prime Minister Modi on 12 September 2022 addressed the inaugural ceremony of World Dairy Summit in Greater Noida and said that the database will be created with the help of biometric identification.
Under NDLM, the Bharat Pashudhan database records field activities and the 1962 App provides authenticated information on best practices and government schemes. Farmers can also call the toll-free number 1962 to get veterinary services through Mobile Veterinary Units at their doorstep.
