Leh Ladakh YounTab Scheme 2026 - Free Tablets for Students, New Phase in Kargil

Ladakh administration is continuing its YounTab free tablet scheme for government school students, with fresh rounds of distribution completed across Kargil district through 2024 and 2025. Under this scheme, students of Class 6 to 12 get free tablets loaded with study material, so they can keep learning even in areas with weak internet connectivity.

Ladakh administration first launched this scheme on 4 June 2021, when Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur handed out 12,300 tablets to students in Leh. Since then, several zones of Kargil district, including Chiktan, Kargil, Sankoo, Zanskar and Drass, have covered left-out students in phases, with the latest phase completed in Sankoo on 11 June 2025.

What is Leh Ladakh YounTab Scheme 2026

Leh Ladakh YounTab Scheme is a free tablet scheme for students of the Union Territory of Ladakh (earlier part of Jammu & Kashmir state). It is run by the Department of School Education with technical support from the Information Technology Department. Tablets under the scheme come preloaded with online and offline study content, so students in remote areas with poor network coverage can still study without trouble.

New Tablet Distribution Phases in Kargil (2024-2025)

Scheme did not stop after the 2021 launch in Leh. LAHDC Kargil distributed around 760 tablets to left-out students across various schools of Kargil district in February 2024, covering students who had missed out during the first round.

Through 2025, School Education Department Ladakh ran the distribution zone by zone in Kargil district. First phase was completed in Chiktan Zone on 28 April 2025, covering all schools of that zone. Second phase followed in Kargil Zone on 4 June 2025 at the Conference Hall, CEO Office Baroo, where tablets were handed over to schools of the zone. Third phase was completed in Sankoo Zone on 11 June 2025 at the Deputy CEO Office, with all schools of Sankoo Zone covered. Zanskar and Drass zones also received tablets for meritorious and left-out students in separate rounds run by the education department.

This shows scheme is still running and is not a one-time distribution limited to 2021. Students who join government schools later or were missed earlier keep getting covered as fresh phases roll out in different zones.

Who Can Get Free Tablets Under This Scheme

Students studying in Class 6 to 12 in government schools of Ladakh are eligible for a free tablet under YounTab scheme. There is no online application or portal for this. Schools themselves prepare lists of eligible students, and the education department distributes tablets zone by zone through the concerned Chief Education Officer or Zonal Education Officer. Students who were left out in earlier rounds get covered when the next zone-wise phase reaches their school.

Statement of Ladakh Administration on YounTab Scheme

At the 2021 launch event, LG Mathur talked about the importance of education technology in the coming years. He said he was glad that an immediate need of students in Ladakh had been met. Tablets were given to students from remote areas during that event.

LG Mathur said scheme was not limited to the pandemic period, but was meant to bring technology into the education system for the long term. He also mentioned that telecom companies operating in Ladakh had agreed to put up additional mobile towers to improve network access for students.

Additional Telecom Towers for Network Coverage

Ladakh administration had also approached the Telecommunication Department to lay optical fibre cable up to block level under NOFN, in place of VSATs. For this, an additional 115 towers with 1,760 km of cable were requested, to get full network coverage across Ladakh so that tablets and online content could actually be used where needed.

LG Mathur had pointed out that a NITI Aayog report on Sustainable Development Goals showed a need for big improvement in Ladakh's education sector, including full enrolment and zero dropouts in schools. He also praised the Department of Education for reaching a 100 percent target in teacher training, and said NCERT support in training and curriculum would help further.

Rewa Scheme - Coaching Support for Meritorious Students

Along with YounTab, Ladakh administration also runs Rewa Scheme, which gives money help to meritorious students of Class 10 and 12 for coaching towards exams such as NEET, JEE, NDA and CLAT. Coaching fee up to Rs 1 lakh gets reimbursed under this scheme. Students clearing preliminary exams of Civil Services, IES and IFS get support up to Rs 1.54 lakh.

Rs 25 lakh was also announced to Gram Panchayats from the LG's fund, to set up better facilities in villages for community classes for primary school students. Students from Ladakh going for higher studies outside the region can also check the PM Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS), which covers J&K and Ladakh students separately.

Yes. Scheme is still running. Fresh zone-wise phases covering left-out students in Kargil district were completed as recently as June 2025, so it is not a closed, one-time scheme.

How can a student get a free tablet under this scheme

There is no online form to fill. Schools prepare lists of eligible Class 6 to 12 students, and the education department hands out tablets through the Zonal or Chief Education Officer when that zone's phase comes up.

What if a student was left out in an earlier round

Left-out students are not permanently excluded. The 2024 and 2025 rounds in Kargil district were specifically meant to cover students who missed the earlier distribution.
