The state cabinet committee has also approved the implementation of Vayomadhuram Scheme to provide glucometer to senior citizens. According to guidelines of the department will provide glucometers to 1000 diabetic old age persons in each district. This scheme will enable diabetic patients to monitor blood sugar (glucose) levels by utilizing free kits comprising of 1 Glucometer and 25 Test Strips to every senior citizen.

The primary objective is to help the diabetic patients in their old age who are at higher risk of diseases. Only those applicants who fulfills the eligibility criteria mentioned below will become eligible for Kerala Vayomadhuram Glucometer Scheme for diabetic senior citizens of BPL families:-

• Applicant must be a permanent resident of the Kerala state.
• He / she must be a senior citizen i.e elderly person must be above 60 years of age.
• Applicant must be suffering from diabetes and for this purpose, certificate from an authorized doctor is required.
• If there are a large number of applicants, priority will be given to older persons.
• The applicants must belong to the below poverty line (BPL) category.

Based on the recent studies conducted by ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) 19.4% people have diabetes in Kerala. 80% of the oldage population in Kerala suffers from diabetes. With the intention of an old age friendly State, the Social Justice Department under Government of Kerala has introduced a new initiative titled “Vayomadhuram”.

• The applicant has to submit copy of Aadhar card as age proof.
• Medical certificate issued by Govt./NRHM Doctor certifying that the applicant is suffering from diabetes.
• Self-attested copy of BPL ration card / Copy of BPL certificate issued from Panchayath/Municipality/Corporation / BPL Income certificate from concerned Village office.
