Tamil Nadu Tatkal Scheme 2026 is accepting applications for free agricultural power connections through the TNPDCL online portal. Farmers who pay for the pump motor get the electricity service connection free under this scheme. The scheme is being implemented by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) and Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) for farmers of Tamil Nadu.

The scheme was launched by former Chief Minister MK Stalin in September 2021 with a target of one lakh free connections. In December 2025, the state government added 10,000 more connections under the Tatkal scheme for the 2025-26 financial year. Farmers can apply online from anywhere in the state.

Tamil Nadu Tatkal Scheme for Free Power Connection to Farmers

Former Chief Minister MK Stalin rolled out the one lakh farm electricity connection scheme on 23 September 2021. Marking the launch of the Rs 3,025 crore scheme, Stalin distributed orders for providing electricity connections for pumpsets to 10 farmers at the Anna Centenary Library auditorium. The scheme was announced in the state assembly during the demand for grants for the Energy Department.

Under the Tatkal scheme, the farmer has to pay the cost of the pump motor and the government provides the agricultural service connection free. The scheme works on a first come, first served basis across the state. In December 2025, the state government announced 10,000 additional free agricultural power connections under the Tatkal scheme for the 2025-26 financial year. The application deadline for this round was extended to 31 December 2025.

How to Apply for Tatkal Scheme Online

STEP 1 - Go to the official TNPDCL online application portal at app1.tangedco.org/nsconline and select the type of application needed.

STEP 2 - Choose 'New Service Connection' and select the Agriculture category from the drop down menu.

STEP 3 - Enter the mobile number and verify it with the OTP sent to the phone. Aadhaar number is required for the application.

STEP 4 - Fill in the applicant details, address, well and land details, upload the required documents like VAO certificate and no objection certificate, and pay the registration fee.

The Tatkal scheme application form is now available online through the TNPDCL portal. Earlier, farmers had to download a PDF form from the TANGEDCO website and submit it at the section office. The new process is fully online and farmers can also get help from the nearest TANGEDCO or TNPDCL section office. Cost of Motor under Tatkal Scheme

Under the Tatkal scheme, the farmer has to pay the project amount based on the capacity of the pump motor. The government then provides the free agricultural power connection. The cost structure is given below.

• Up to 5 HP motor - Rs 2.5 lakh
• 5 HP to 7.5 HP motor - Rs 2.75 lakh
• 7.5 HP to 10 HP motor - Rs 3 lakh
• 10 HP to 15 HP motor - Rs 4 lakh

The farmer who buys a motor as per the above slabs gets the free agricultural electricity connection from the Tamil Nadu government. TANGEDCO, the nodal agency, has received thousands of application forms from farmers under the Tatkal scheme over the years.

Need for One Lakh Free Farm Connection Scheme

Former Chief Minister MK Stalin had mentioned that during the previous AIADMK regime, only about 2 lakh power connections were provided in 10 years. His government planned to provide 1 lakh connections in a short period. He also listed schemes of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi like the Cauvery issue, waiver of Rs 7,000 crore farm loans, providing land to landless farm labourers and free electricity to farmers.

Challenges in Implementation

Implementation of the free agricultural connection scheme has faced delays. As per an RTI reply received in July 2025, TANGEDCO provided only 15,000 free agricultural power connections during 2024-25 against the initial announcement of 50,000 connections. The target was later revised to 15,000 for the 2025-26 financial year. In 2026, farmer groups have raised concerns about delays, with thousands of farmers who paid under the Tatkal scheme still waiting for connections.

The state government has been working on power generation and maintenance projects to support the scheme. New power generation projects and a solar power park in Tiruvarur were part of the earlier plans. The scheme continues under the new state government, and district-wise targets for free connections are being revised based on performance.
