UP Free Ration Scheme 2026 - Free Ration Distribution to Cardholders under NFSA

Uttar Pradesh government is distributing free ration to cardholders every month under the National Food Security Act 2013 (NFSA). The free ration drive for August 2026 started on 5 August and continued till 18 August. Ration cardholders had to show their card at the designated ration shop to collect the free wheat and rice.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the PM Narendra Modi-led central government has been giving free ration to poor families. Earlier, this support was given under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). From 1 January 2023, free ration is being distributed under the NFSA. The scheme now runs on a regular monthly basis, and the state government keeps adding new eligible families to the list.

PMGKAY was run in seven phases between April 2020 and December 2022, costing the central government a total of about Rs 3.43 trillion. Because the states off-take of grains in the scheme's 7th phase, which ran from October to December 2022, was 9.17 million tonnes, the final expenditure came to about Rs 34,208 crore, lower than the earlier estimate of Rs 44,762 crore.

Since the free ration program started in April 2020, the central government has supplied more than 100 MT of foodgrains to help people who were suffering from the Covid-19 pandemic. The program has been running continuously with a few extensions. From 1 January 2023, the free ration benefit moved to the NFSA, and it now continues as a monthly distribution in Uttar Pradesh.

Yogi government adds 47 lakh new families

Uttar Pradesh Food and Civil Supplies Minister Manoj Kumar Pandey has said that the state government is adding about 47 lakh new eligible people to the NFSA free ration scheme. At present, around 16 crore people in the state are getting free ration every month. The government wants to make sure that no eligible person is left out of the scheme.

The Food and Civil Supplies Department is running a special verification drive across the state to find families that are eligible but not yet covered. Once the checking is done, eligible families will get a ration card and start receiving free ration. The department is also using e-POS machines and digital checking to make sure the ration reaches the right person and there is no black marketing or fake cards.

Benefits of UP Free Ration Scheme

There are many benefits of the UP Free Ration Scheme. The main benefit is that poor families get wheat and rice free of cost every month. All eligible residents can get the food items from the ration shop near their house without paying any money. This helps poor families cut their monthly food spending and improves food security.

Documents Required

The following documents are required while getting the free ration from the PDS shops:

• Aadhaar card - Needed for digital checking at the ration shop under the e-KYC process.
• Ration card - The main document that shows the family is covered under the NFSA.

Registration Procedure

There is no fixed registration procedure under the scheme. A family that is eligible under the NFSA and has a valid ration card can get free ration from the nearest PDS shop. Families that are not yet covered can apply for a new ration card through the official portal at fcs.up.gov.in or through the local tehsil or CSC center. After the eligibility check, the family gets a ration card and starts receiving free ration.

For checking the ration card list or the status of a new card, card holders can visit the official portal at nfsa.up.gov.in. The state food and civil supplies department also runs an online grievance system for any complaint related to ration distribution.
