The Mission of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Yojana is to enable higher educational institutions to work with the people of rural India in finding development challenges and evolving suitable solutions for faster sustainable growth. Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0
More than half of the population of India lives in villages. Every village has some specialty along with some challenges. Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 makes students learn about the problems faced by rural people and find practical solutions for their betterment. Under this scheme, students and professors of Higher Educational Institutions motivate the rural public for socio economic development of villages through several schemes and initiatives meant for rural development.
In the past few years, people from villages moved towards urban areas for a better lifestyle. This Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 will make sure of sustainable development of villages and reverse this migration process. The scheme aims to enrich Rural India through a strong relationship between society and higher educational institutions. As per the official portal, around 5,185 institutions are now part of this national movement and the UBA network covers more than 24,700 villages.
Central govt. wants to cover around 45,000 villages for which the participation of 8,252 Higher Education Institutions is required to make it a Jan Andolan (people's movement). Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 is a two way process - Higher Education Institutions will learn from the wisdom of rural people and people will learn from the knowledge and technology support of these institutions.
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 Implementation
Under this unnat bharat yojana, govt. will select institutions in a challenge mode and will extend it to reputed higher education institutions (both public and private). Subject Expert Groups (SEGs) and Regional Coordinating Institutes (RCIs) will guide the participating institutions. IIT Delhi will be the National Coordinating Institute for this unnat bharat abhiyan. All the reputed institutions will get covered in a phased manner.
Every institution will have to adopt a cluster of villages or panchayats to gradually expand the reach over a particular duration. Faculty and students will study the living conditions, local problems and needs in these adopted villages. Afterwards with the use of technology, these institutions need to improve the process of implementation of govt. schemes and prepare a working action plan for the villages.
All the institutions are expected to work in coordination with district administration, elected public representatives of panchayat or villages and other stakeholders. Faculty and students will be re-oriented and connected to ground reality of villages in order to properly use their learning and research for the welfare of society. Background
The conceptualization of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan started with the initiative of a group of dedicated faculty members of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi working for long in the area of rural development and appropriate technology. The concept was nurtured through wide consultation with the representatives of a number of technical institutions, Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) coordinators, voluntary organizations and government agencies, actively involved in rural development work, during a National workshop held at IIT Delhi in September 2014.
The workshop was sponsored by Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology (CAPART), Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India. The program was formally launched by the Ministry of Education (MoE) (formerly Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)) in presence of The President of India on 11th November 2014. Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 was later launched in February 2018 to expand the reach of the scheme to more institutions and villages.
