Jharkhand government runs Ayushman Bharat Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-MMJAY) as the state version of the Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. Under this CM Health Insurance Scheme, the state provides cashless and paperless treatment up to Rs. 5 lakh per family every year to all eligible beneficiaries. The scheme is still active and the state has approved a fresh budget for the 2026-27 financial year.
For the 2026-27 financial year, the Jharkhand government has approved Rs. 220 crore for running AB-MMJAY. Out of this, Rs. 200 crore will be spent under the urban health services (general) head and Rs. 20 crore under the tribal area sub-plan. This decision brings around 61.50 lakh families in the state under the health insurance cover.
Jharkhand Ayushman Bharat Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana 2026
Each person whose name appears in SECC-2011 data can get health insurance benefits up to Rs. 5 lakh. The amount under Ayushman Bharat Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana covers secondary and tertiary hospitalization, and all pre-existing diseases are covered from Day 1. The aim of the Jharkhand state government is to provide quality health care services, especially for people living in remote and difficult areas, so that the number of diseases comes down. The scheme also helps reduce the money burden on state residents and lets them get better treatment.

How the Scheme Works
Under the scheme, each eligible family gets health insurance cover of up to Rs. 5 lakh per year. This amount is split into two parts. Around Rs. 1 lakh is provided under the insurance liability and the remaining Rs. 4 lakh under the trust liability. The treatment is cashless and paperless at all empanelled government and private hospitals in the state.
Who Can Get the Benefit
The scheme now covers more families than before. Earlier it was limited to families listed in the SECC-2011 data. Now the state has widened the reach to include families under the National Food Security Act and the new green ration card holders as well.
Around 28.05 lakh families from the SECC-2011 list are covered under the scheme. For these families, the central government pays 60 percent of the premium and the state government pays the remaining 40 percent. In addition, around 30.44 lakh families under the National Food Security Act and about 3 lakh new green ration card families are covered, and the full cost for them is borne by the state government from its own resources.
With this decision, around 61.50 lakh families in the state now come under the Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana. This gives poor and needy families money support for treating serious illnesses and strengthens their access to health services.
Earlier Schemes Merged into AB-MMJAY
Mukhyamantri Swasthya Beema Yojana (MSBY) was a health insurance scheme of Jharkhand launched on 15th November 2017. The state government had implemented it from 28th December 2017 to provide health insurance cover to state residents. The MSBY scheme gave benefits to about 57 lakh families who were covered under the National Food Security Act. The government was providing free and cashless treatment to the poor families under the scheme.
In the earlier MSBY Jharkhand scheme, the state government did not take any premium amount from the poor people, and the whole premium was paid by the government. Treatment under the Mukhyamantri Swasthya Beema Yojana was available at all government hospitals and empanelled private health centers. The government had also listed popular and well-known hospitals and nursing homes at its border and in neighboring states for free and cashless treatment under the scheme.
Mukhyamantri Gambhir Bimari Upachar Yojana earlier covered treatment of 84 types of diseases. Now 80 diseases are covered under the Ayushman Bharat Mukhya Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. Only 4 diseases, namely Cancer, Kidney Transplantation, serious liver ailments and acid attack victims, remain under the Mukhyamantri Gambhir Bimari Upachar Yojana. The rest of the diseases are merged into the Ayushman Bharat Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
Earlier the MSBY and Mukhyamantri Gambhir Bimari Upachar Yojana were merged and the new health scheme was implemented under the name of Ayushman Bharat Mukhya Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in Jharkhand.
Jharkhand also runs the Mukhyamantri Abua Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, which gives free health cover up to Rs. 15 lakh per family. This scheme works along with the AB-PMJAY and AB-MMJAY. It covers families who may need higher treatment support for serious illnesses. The Abua Swasthya Card is issued to each member of the family so they can use the benefits at empanelled hospitals.
