Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Central government, runs Khelo India School Games (KISG) every year for school children between 10 and 17 years of age, under the broader Khelo India Programme. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya relaunched KISG in a new format from August 2025, with matches held at district, state and national level instead of one single national event.

Khelo India School Games Registration 2026

Earlier, students used to register through their schools on a portal called schoolgames.kheloindia.gov.in, but that system is not the active route anymore. Registration now runs through NSRS (National Sports Repository System), a single database that Khelo India uses across School Games, Youth Games and other events.

STEP 1 - Visit nsrs.kheloindia.gov.in and check whether the school is already registered as a Sports Training Centre on the portal. If not, school administration needs to complete this registration first, picking the state and district from the dropdown list and setting up a login password.

STEP 2 - Once the school is registered, add each student athlete under the school profile with their name, date of birth, Aadhaar number, bank account details and a passport size photo. Aadhaar is required since it is used to check the age of the player.

STEP 3 - Submit the school bonafide certificate and other required documents for verification. State sports body or the school checks this data before it gets approved.

STEP 4 - After approval, student becomes eligible to take part in the district level trials of Khelo India School Games, and can move ahead to state and national rounds based on performance.

What is Khelo India School Games

Khelo India School Games is the school level layer of the wider Khelo India Programme, which the central government runs to find and support sporting talent early. First edition was held in New Delhi in 2018, and it later grew into Khelo India Youth Games in 2019 to cover a wider under-21 group as well. In May 2025, government announced a fresh annual calendar under Khelo India, and School Games came back as a separate event with district, state and national rounds, running roughly from August to December every year.

Idea behind KISG is simple. Talent gets picked early, at the school level itself, instead of waiting for players to reach college. Good performers get access to training support and a path towards Khelo India Youth Games, and eventually national teams.

Eligibility for Khelo India School Games

Player needs to be a school going student, generally between 10 and 17 years old, studying in a recognised school in India. Age proof through Aadhaar card is required, and player has to be registered under a school that is itself registered on the NSRS portal as a training centre or participating school.

Sports Included in Khelo India School Games

Number and list of sports can change a bit every year depending on the calendar the sports ministry releases, but the games generally cover both Olympic disciplines and a few traditional Indian sports. Some of the common sports across recent editions include:

  • Athletics, swimming and gymnastics, which test the basic fitness and body control of young athletes.
  • Team sports such as football, hockey, kabaddi, kho-kho and volleyball, which need coordination and group training.
  • Combat and precision sports like boxing, judo, wrestling, archery and shooting, which need dedicated coaching setups.
  • Traditional and indigenous games such as mallakhamba, kalaripayattu and silambam, which Khelo India added in recent years to promote India's own sporting heritage.

Exact list, venue and dates for each sport at district and state level gets published by respective state sports departments closer to the games.

Documents Required for Registration

Before a school or a student starts the registration process on NSRS, keep these documents ready:

  • Aadhaar card of the student, used mainly for age verification and to avoid duplicate entries.
  • School bonafide or ID certificate confirming the student is currently enrolled.
  • Recent passport size photograph in the format asked on the portal.
  • Bank account details of the student or parent, needed in case of scholarship or reward money later.

History of Khelo India School Games

First edition of these games took place in New Delhi between 31 January and 8 February 2018, and it covered 16 sports across venues like Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Complex, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium Complex and Dr Karni Singh Shooting Ranges. That event was organised with the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) and various National Sports Federations, and organisers wanted to cover close to 20 crore school children across the country, under the "Sports For All" idea.

Government made an anthem for this first edition, with the tagline "Aur khelna chahte hain hum, Khub khelo saath me hain hum". That anthem video is still available below.

After 2018, School Games got folded into Khelo India Youth Games for a few years. Sports Ministry brought back School Games as its own event from August 2025, with a district to state to national structure so that more schools across the country get a real chance to take part, not just those close to one host city.

In Technical bulletin of 1st. Khelo India scholl games I saw in individual event total 16 will be participant in each event whom 1st 8 will be taken from 1st 8 position holders of National School Games. I am talking about Athletics. As per schedule I saw from 31st. January the Athletics events will be held. But is the 1st. 8 position holders of each events of Athletics were got the travel schedule etc. They should get there selection and also the travel schedule in proper time.
The programme taken by Government of India is excellence for the budding athletes / players. I hope from this project India will get proper athletes who will represent india in future. But the athletes/ players should get the required information inproper and due time otherwise the fate of the game will be questionable.

Vipul, you will have to fill the online registration form as it was in the First Khelo India School Games. But these games (2nd edition) dates are not final yet. For now, we are organizing First National Para Games for Divyang Jans (Persons with disabilities).
