Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) runs an online registration portal, Kerala Nouka - The IV Connect (Inland Vessel E-Portal), for all inland mechanized vessels, including houseboats, in the state. The online registration of boats and inland vessels started on August 1, 2024, and the portal is now the only way to register and survey mechanized inland water vessels in Kerala.

The state government built this portal to make the registration process easier and to improve the safety of vessels. It is part of the safety steps taken after the Tanur boat accident and is based on the new Inland Vessels Act, 2021.

The online system also helps stop illegal activities in the maritime sector. Kerala is the first state in India to build such an online registration portal for boats or inland vessels under the new Act.

Benefits of Boat & Inland Vessels Online Registration Portal

  • Unique QR Codes: Vessels registered via the portal receive a unique QR code. Additionally, another QR code is issued to passengers and inspection officers. These QR codes provide detailed information about the boat, including its passenger capacity.
  • Safety and Compliance: The portal makes it easier to identify and seize illegal vessels. Kerala Maritime Board has deployed speedboats to enforce these rules across the state.
  • Digital Records: The details of already registered vessels are being transferred to the portal. Annual surveys for these vessels are also conducted through the system, making sure records stay up to date.

Annual Survey Process

Once registered, your vessel will undergo an annual survey to make sure it keeps meeting safety rules. The annual survey process is also conducted through the online portal. Make sure all required documents and inspection reports are updated and submitted on time.

Kerala Maritime Board is also working on digitizing other activities in the maritime sector to further improve safety and clarity. According to KMB Chairman N.S. Pillai, these measures will help stop illegal activities and prevent boat accidents.

By adopting this online registration system, Kerala is setting a benchmark in maritime safety and regulation, making sure of a safer and clearer boating experience for all.
