Central government has made FASTag required for all vehicles, private or commercial, and from April 1, 2026, National Highway toll plazas do not accept cash anymore, only FASTag or UPI works at the toll booth. This post explains how to buy FASTag for vehicles online and recharge these toll tags. This electronic toll collection tag is issued by more than 30 certified banks. The complete banks list issuing FASTags along with their charges is given below.
Vehicles without a valid FASTag still have to pay double the normal toll charge at highway toll plazas. FASTag can be bought through Point-of-Sale (POS) counters at National Highway toll plazas and bank branches. It can also be bought or recharged from Amazon, Paytm, PhonePe, MyAirtel and other e-commerce platforms. Activation happens through the My FASTag mobile app, available on the Google Play Store, or by contacting the issuing bank directly.
Buy FASTag for Vehicles from Banks - Check List and Charges
Since FASTag is required for all vehicles, it is important to buy one before travelling on national highways. People can buy FASTag by visiting the nearest certified bank branch and getting it linked to their existing bank account. Here is the list of banks providing FASTags along with their charges:-
Note: Reserve Bank of India cancelled the licence of Paytm Payments Bank Ltd in 2026, and Paytm FASTag issuance and recharge is no longer available through it. Vehicle owners still holding a Paytm FASTag should get a fresh FASTag from another bank on this list, since the old tag cannot be topped up anymore.

FASTag Activation Process
1.) FASTag Activation Through Banks - At the time of FASTag activation, people need to submit KYC (Know Your Customer) documents as per the bank's KYC policy, along with the vehicle's Registration Certificate (RC).
2.) FASTag Activation from My FASTag App - Android users can download the My FASTag app from the Google Play Store, and iPhone users can get it from the Apple Store. Direct link to download - My Fastag App Download (Google Play Store)
FASTags are bank-neutral, which means no bank is pre-assigned to the tag at the time of purchase from a POS terminal or online platform. Online FASTag works on a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) basis where self-activation happens by entering vehicle details in the My FASTag mobile app.
FASTags are prepaid rechargeable tags for toll collection that allow automatic payment deduction. These tags are normally fixed on the windscreen of vehicles. Once activated, a vehicle does not need to stop at toll plazas to pay toll. As soon as the vehicle crosses the plaza, the toll fee gets deducted automatically from the bank account or prepaid wallet linked to the FASTag.
An activated FASTag works on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. FASTags do not have an expiry date, which means they stay usable as long as they are readable at the toll plaza and are not damaged.

FASTag Annual Pass 2026 - Price and Validity
NHAI revised the FASTag Annual Pass fee to ₹3,075 for FY 2026-27, up from ₹3,000 earlier. This one-time pass gives private vehicles like cars, jeeps and vans unlimited toll trips for one year or up to 200 trips, whichever comes first, at more than 1,000 toll plazas on National Highways and National Expressways. The pass works only with a valid, KYC-updated FASTag, and can be activated through the My FASTag app or the NHAI website.
New FASTag Rules from 2026
From April 1, 2026, cash payments are not accepted at National Highway toll plazas anymore, only FASTag and UPI work there. Know Your Vehicle (KYV) checking is not required anymore for private vehicles like cars, jeeps and vans from February 1, 2026, which makes fresh FASTag issuance faster. Three timing rules apply too: recharge the tag at least 70 minutes before reaching a toll plaza if the balance is low, tags that stay inactive for over 60 minutes can get blacklisted, and if payment does not clear within 15 minutes of crossing the toll, extra charges may apply. A nationwide switch to satellite-based (GNSS) tolling is still under pilot testing, and FASTag remains the main toll payment method for now.
Recharge FASTag on Google Pay / Phone Pe App Using BHIM UPI ID
National Payments Corporation of India lets people recharge FASTag online using BHIM UPI ID on Google Pay or Phone Pe app. FASTag is required for every vehicle on the road to pay toll at toll plazas. As per NPCI guidelines, all banks licensed to provide FASTag services should give customers an option to recharge FASTag through UPI. Both Google Pay and Phone Pe apps are popular and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. Either app can be used to recharge FASTag, whichever bank issued it.
The UPI handle for FASTag recharge is netc.XXXXXXXXX@bank-name. For example, if the FASTag is from Equitas bank and the vehicle number is KA 02 N 1234, the UPI VPA (Virtual Payment Address) or UPI ID would be netc.ka02n1234@equitas. This UPI ID is case insensitive, so NETC.KA02n1234@EQUITAS is the same as netc.ka02n1234@equitas.
