Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Yojana: Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme is running and students can claim the full interest subsidy on education loans for technical and professional courses in India. Students from families with total annual parental income up to ₹4.5 Lakhs get this subsidy during the moratorium period, and the whole process now runs through the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal.
Launched by the Ministry of Education in 2009, the scheme is still going strong in 2026. In FY 2025-26, Canara Bank received 4,14,844 claims of about ₹892.81 crore under this scheme, which shows how many students depend on this support every year.
Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan Yojana: Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme - Introduction
PM-USP CSIS makes sure that money problems do not stop deserving students from completing higher education. Students from families earning up to ₹4.5 Lakhs per year get a full interest subsidy during the moratorium period, which keeps the loan cost low. The government pays the interest that builds up while the student is studying and for one year after the course ends.
The benefit applies to professional and technical courses offered by NAAC-accredited institutions, NBA-accredited programs, or other centrally recognized institutes of national importance. Canara Bank is the nodal bank that manages the running of this scheme.
Students can check the list of accredited technical institutions and professional programs through official government sources such as the Ministry of Education website or the NBA official site. The lending bank has the final say on whether a particular course qualifies for the subsidy.
Scheme Update 2026
The scheme is still active and the government now runs it through the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal. The subsidy amount is credited to the PM Vidyalaxmi Digital Rupee App (CBDC Wallet) and then moved to the education loan account. As of 22 July 2026, 35,777 wallets are active and subsidies worth ₹57.66 crore have been paid through this system.
Along with CSIS, the government is also giving an extra 3% interest subvention under PM-Vidyalaxmi for students from families earning up to ₹8 Lakh per year, on loans up to ₹10 Lakh. This benefit is for students admitted on merit to 1,425 Quality Higher Educational Institutions (QHEIs), and up to 1 lakh fresh students can get this 3% subvention every year. The government has set aside ₹3,600 crore for PM-Vidyalaxmi from 2024-25 to 2030-31.
