Why e-Gopala App Was Replaced
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led central govt. had launched e-Gopala Mobile App on 10 September 2020 in Bihar, along with PM Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. That app worked well for a few years and helped farmers manage livestock, but the system behind it has since moved to a bigger, more connected database.

About e-Gopala App (Now Discontinued)
e-Gopala provided a platform to farmers for managing livestock, including buying and selling of disease free germplasm in all forms, such as semen and embryos. It told farmers about availability of quality breeding services, such as Artificial Insemination, veterinary first aid, vaccination and treatment. It also guided farmers on animal nutrition and treatment using ayurvedic or ethno veterinary medicine.
At the time of launch, there was a mechanism to send alerts on due dates for vaccination, pregnancy diagnosis and calving, and to inform farmers about government schemes and campaigns. PM Modi had also inaugurated a Semen Station with modern facilities in Purnea, built with an investment of around Rs. 84.27 crore on 75 acres of land given by Bihar government.
Along with e-Gopala, central govt. had also launched Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) for fisheries sector. As part of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat package, Centre had planned to invest Rs 20,050 crore for its rollout during 2020-21 to 2024-25, with a target to raise fish production by an additional 70 lakh tonne and cut post-harvest losses from 20-25% to about 10%.
National Digital Livestock Mission and Pashu Aadhaar
NDLM works on a project called Bharat Pashudhan, built to create a single digital database of livestock across the country. Every animal gets a 12 digit bar coded ear tag, called Pashu Aadhaar, which field workers use to record animal registration, breeding activity, ownership change, vaccination, e-prescriptions, ration balancing and disease reporting.
As per latest figures, field workers have been issued around 4 lakh user IDs, and over 146.6 crore vaccination records have been entered into the system. Total transactional records available on Bharat Pashudhan platform have crossed 250 crore. Programmes like Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) and National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) also run on this same platform now.
