Telangana Breakfast Scheme Relaunch

Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar launched the scheme at Raj Bhavan Government High School in Hyderabad on June 15, 2026. Books and notebooks were also distributed to students on the occasion. Around 1.44 lakh students of schools and intermediate classes will benefit in the first phase.

Under the scheme, every student gets milk on three days a week and ragi jawa on the remaining three days. The breakfast menu includes dosa, millet idli, puri, upma and bonda, with one item repeated on two days. Millet-based food is served to keep the meal healthy and nutritious.

The government expects this scheme to improve nutrition and health outcomes, increase attendance and punctuality, and reduce dropouts and absenteeism among students. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme has also been extended to students pursuing higher secondary education in government junior colleges.

Phase-wise Rollout

The scheme will be rolled out in a phase-wise manner in all government schools and junior colleges across the state through a network of centralised kitchens. In the first phase, the Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Trust and Manna Trust will implement the scheme across eight districts. More institutions will be added in the coming phases.

Background of the Scheme

The breakfast scheme was originally introduced by the previous K. Chandrashekar Rao led BRS government. It was launched on October 6, 2023, and rolled out statewide on October 24, 2023, around the Dasara festival. The scheme aimed to provide free nutritious breakfast to students from Classes 1 to 10 in government schools, with an annual budget of around Rs. 400 crore.

After the Congress government assumed office in December 2023, the scheme was halted.
