West Bengal has 23 districts, 345 blocks, and 3,339 gram panchayats covered under MGNREGA. NREGA job card list for West Bengal (state code 32) is available for financial years going back to 2010-11 and up to 2026-27. The current MGNREGA wage rate for West Bengal workers is ₹250 per day for FY 2025-26. Anyone who is a rural household member and willing to do unskilled manual work can apply for a job card and get employment under this scheme.

LATEST UPDATE: MGNREGA was suspended in West Bengal on March 9, 2022 under Section 27 of the MGNREGA Act, 2005, citing non-compliance with central government directives. The Calcutta High Court ruled in June 2025 that the suspension violated the right to work and ordered the scheme to resume from August 1, 2025. The Supreme Court upheld this order on October 28, 2025 after the Centre challenged it. Following this, the Ministry of Rural Development officially resumed MGNREGA in West Bengal on December 6, 2025, with special conditions attached. West Bengal now gets quarterly (not annual) labour budget approvals based on performance and compliance. Before the suspension, West Bengal was among the top-performing states with 51 to 80 lakh families benefiting from MGNREGA each year between 2014-15 and 2021-22.

MGNREGA Resumption in West Bengal - What Changed

MGNREGA was suspended in West Bengal in March 2022 after the central government found problems like financial irregularities, non-permissible works being executed, project splitting, and lack of transparency. When the scheme resumed in December 2025, the Ministry of Rural Development put several strict conditions in place to make sure these issues don't repeat.

These are the key conditions that now apply to MGNREGA in West Bengal. All job cards in the state must be reviewed and updated within one month of resumption. Every worker registered under MGNREGA must complete 100% e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) verification. All wage payments are made only through Aadhaar Payment Bridge System (APBS)-enabled Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into the workers' own bank accounts - no middlemen. No single MGNREGA work order in West Bengal can exceed ₹20 lakh in cost. Pre-estimation field visits are required for all works before they start. Labour budgets for West Bengal are approved every quarter instead of annually, and only based on actual performance and compliance. The West Bengal state government had to submit its labour budget proposal within 30 days of receiving the official resumption order.

West Bengal MGNREGA Workers - Current Status

As per official data on nrega.nic.in, West Bengal has 2,56,96,073 total registered NREGA workers - one of the largest in the country. However, due to the long suspension period, only 9,334 workers were showing as active at the time of resumption, which is just 0.04% of total registered workers. This is expected to improve rapidly as the scheme has now resumed and job cards are being updated. Before the suspension (between 2014-15 and 2021-22), 51 to 80 lakh families were actively benefiting from MGNREGA in the state every year.

Women form a large part of the MGNREGA workforce in West Bengal, and the scheme is known to help rural women earn steady income while staying close to home. All payments under the resumed scheme go directly to workers' Aadhaar-linked bank accounts, making wage payments faster and more reliable than before.

MGNREGA West Bengal Wage Rate 2025-26

The central government revises MGNREGA wage rates every year in March or April. For FY 2025-26 (April 2025 to March 2026), the West Bengal daily wage rate under MGNREGA is ₹250 per day. Wages are linked to the Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Laborers (CPI-AL) to account for rural inflation. Under the standard scheme, a registered household can earn up to ₹25,000 per year (100 days x ₹250). All wage payments must be made within 15 days of completing the work. If wages are delayed beyond 15 days, workers are entitled to compensation at 0.05% per day under Section 3(3) of the MGNREGA Act, payable from state funds.

How to Apply for New MGNREGA Job Card in West Bengal

If your name is not in the West Bengal NREGA job card list and you want to get a new job card, the process is done at your local Gram Panchayat. Any rural household whose adult members want to do unskilled manual work is eligible to apply. You do not need a special printed form - a plain paper application is also accepted.

STEP 1 - Go to your local Gram Panchayat office and submit a written application requesting registration under MGNREGA. You can write this on plain paper if no printed form is available. The application should include the names and ages of all adult household members who want to work.

STEP 2 - The Gram Panchayat will verify your application within 15 days. They will check that your household is a valid local resident of that gram panchayat and that the applicants are adult members of the household (18 years or above).

STEP 3 - If your application is correct and verified, the job card will be issued within 15 days of verification. The cost of the job card, including the photograph that goes on it, is covered under the scheme and you don't need to pay anything.

STEP 4 - Once issued, the job card will be handed over to any adult member of your household. The job card is your household's legal document and must always stay with you, not with the panchayat or any MGNREGA official. The registration is valid for five years and can be renewed after that.

Job card registrations are open throughout the year, so you can apply at any time. If you face any problem in getting a job card issued, you can raise a complaint with the Block Programme Officer (BPO). All such complaints must be resolved within 15 days. You can also check the West Bengal Job Card page for more details on the application process.

MGNREGA Job Card - What It Contains

MGNREGA job card is the key document for every NREGA beneficiary. It legally empowers registered households to apply for work under the scheme and protects workers against fraud. A job card contains the following information about the registered household.

  • Family details - Name of the household head, address, and names of all adult family members registered for work.
  • Job card number - A unique number assigned to your household which is used for all scheme-related transactions.
  • Bank account details - The bank account number linked for receiving wage payments through DBT.
  • Work history - Complete record of all work done by household members under MGNREGA, including dates, work type, days worked, and wages paid.
  • Photo - Photograph of the household members, affixed on the job card for identity verification.

You can also search for your MGNREGA job card by name on the official portal if you have forgotten your job card number. The state wise NREGA job card list is available for all financial years from 2010-11 onwards. You can also see the full state wise list including links for other states at the NREGA Job Card List page.
