Sagar Samman Award: Sagar Samman Varuna Award

Sagar Samman Varuna Award is the highest national recognition given by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for outstanding and lifelong contribution to the Indian maritime sector. This award is conferred every year during the National Maritime Day celebrations held in April.

Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, through the National Maritime Day Celebrations (Central) Committee and the Directorate General of Shipping, presents this honour to individuals who show exceptional leadership and all-round contribution in the maritime field. For the 2026 edition, the award was given on 6 April 2026 on the occasion of the 63rd National Maritime Day.

Sagar Samman Varuna Award - Introduction

Sagar Samman Awards stand instituted to recognise excellence and outstanding contributions made in identified maritime sectors by entities and organisations. They are conferred under the aegis of the National Maritime Day Celebrations (Central) Committee. The Varuna Award is the highest category among these awards, given for consistently exceptional, all-round and leadership contribution by an individual in the maritime sector over time.

The award cycle runs on a calendar year basis. For the 2026 edition, nominations opened on 1 January 2026 and closed on 28 February 2026. The winner is announced around March and the award is conferred during the National Maritime Day celebrations. The 2026 Varuna Award was conferred on Capt. B. K. Tyagi, Chairman and Managing Director of Shipping Corporation of India Ltd.

The Sagar Samman Awards also include two other categories. Sagar Samman Award for Excellence is the second highest category, given for meritorious and consistent contribution, and carries a ship model and a citation. Sagar Samman Award for Gallantry recognises an exceptional act of bravery in a maritime situation.

Eligibility

To be considered for the award, the following points must be kept in mind:

• Nominations cover the immediately preceding calendar year, so the details given must relate to that year.
• Any entity can nominate, including individuals, companies, firms, associations and organisations.
• Self-nominations are allowed, but they must be supported by at least two recommendations from separate and distinct entities in the maritime sector.
• No currently serving officer of the central, state or union territory government is eligible for the award.
• A cooling-off period of five years applies before a previous awardee can be considered again.
• Posthumous awards are allowed up to five years from the date of demise of the person.
• If no suitable candidate is found in a year, the award is not given in that year.
