Anusandhan National Research Foundation has launched the National Science Chair- Scientific Excellence scheme for superannuated scientists who want to continue their research work. This scheme helps senior scientists stay active in research and share their knowledge with the scientific community. The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) used to run this scheme, but from 2026 onwards, all processes, nominations, and funding are handled by ANRF.
The scheme recognises eminent senior resident Indian superannuated scientists for their outstanding work in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine. It promotes continued research excellence and helps the country get the benefit of experienced scientists even after their retirement. As there are limited chairs available, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) encourages senior researchers to apply when calls are announced.
National Science Chair- Scientific Excellence - Key Details
This scheme honours active senior scientists who have made outstanding contributions to science and want to keep pushing their research forward. The government believes that not using the knowledge of experienced scientists is a loss for the country. So this scheme gives them the support they need to continue their R&D work.
The National Science Chair scheme runs in two modes depending on what kind of work the scientist wants to do. Mode-1 is for those who want to continue active research. Mode-2 is for those who want to focus on thought leadership and mentoring younger scientists.
Mode-1: Scientific Excellence
You qualify if you are a senior scientist with a strong track record proven by publications, patents, technology transfers, or software development and wish to keep advancing your research. The main aim is to provide continuous support for R&D activities to passionate senior scientists based on their scientific output.
A National Science Chair Advisory Committee (NSCAC) has been formed to look after the development of these chairs, manage the selection process, review progress, and make sure the R&D projects stay at a high level. There is a limit of 30 positions available under Mode-1.
Mode-2: Science Leadership
This mode recognises outstanding superannuated scientists who have built a strong international reputation as research leaders. It focuses on mentoring young researchers, conducting new research, publishing in good journals, and helping in policy making. There are 5 positions available under Mode-2.
