Atal School Vardi Yojana 2026 Free Uniform Scheme for Students in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh govt. runs Atal School Vardi Yojana to help students in state run schools get school uniforms. For the academic session 2026-27, the scheme now gives ₹600 per student through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to eligible students of class 1st to 8th. The amount is sent straight to the bank account of the student or the mother, so that families can buy the school uniform without any money problem.

Under the Free Uniform Scheme, all girl students and boys from SC, ST and BPL families studying in class 1st to 8th in government schools get this support. The money is given as per the Right to Education (RTE) rules and under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan guidelines of the Government of India for 2026-27. The scheme was named after former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee because of his special love for the hill folk.

Earlier, the state govt. used to procure and distribute two sets of free school uniforms to students of class 1st to 12th through the Himachal Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation. In 2018-19, around 8,30,945 students of class 1-12 received 2 sets of free uniforms with an outlay of Rs. 73.5 crore. Around 2.5 lakh students of class 1, 6 and 9 also received school bags worth Rs. 7.84 crore.

For the year 2026-27, the Directorate of School Education has moved to a cash support model. Instead of supplying uniforms directly, the department now transfers ₹600 per eligible student through DBT. This amount is meant only for buying the school uniform. The education department has issued separate instructions for PM SHRI schools and other government schools.

Who Gets the Benefit in 2026-27

The benefit under the Free Uniform Scheme for the session 2026-27 is given to students studying in class 1st to 8th in government schools. The support goes to all girl students and to boys belonging to SC, ST and BPL categories. This matches the RTE entitlements and the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan rules.

How the Amount is Given

The Directorate of School Education has asked all Deputy Directors of School Education (Elementary) to collect the details of eligible students from their schools and send the proposal to the directorate. The deadline to submit the beneficiary details and bank account information was 3 August 2026. Once the details are received, the funds are released to the districts and then transferred to the bank accounts of the students.

For the year 2026-27, the department issued two separate letters. One letter is for all government schools except PM SHRI schools, and the other is only for PM SHRI schools. This is done so that the amount reaches the right students on time and no eligible child is left out.
