Uttar Pradesh government is running Panchayat Kalyan Kosh scheme for the families of elected panchayat representatives who pass away while holding office. The scheme is run by the Panchayati Raj Department and it gives financial support of ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh depending on the post held by the deceased representative. In the last three years, the state has paid ₹136.22 crore to 3,866 such families.

Applications are being accepted online through the official portals, and after checking and approval, the money goes straight to the family's bank account. The scheme covers gram pradhans, kshetra panchayat pramukhs, zila panchayat presidents and all elected members of the three-tier panchayat system.

Panchayat Kalyan Kosh - Introduction

Panchayat Kalyan Kosh was announced by the Uttar Pradesh government on 15 December 2021 and it has been running since 16 December 2021. It exists to support families who face sudden hardship after the loss of an elected representative. This support is strictly for natural or accidental deaths that happen during the tenure of the representative. The scheme does not cover cases of suicide or any involvement in criminal activities.

Uttar Pradesh has nearly eight lakh elected representatives in its three-tier panchayat system, and most of them work without regular salaries or perks. This scheme makes sure that families of these representatives are not left without money help when the family loses its earning member suddenly.
