Scheme for Setting Up of Centre of Excellence is a central government scheme run by the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. It gives financial support of up to ₹5,00,00,000 to Government universities and research organisations for joint research in the chemicals and petrochemicals sector. The scheme is a sub-scheme under the umbrella New Scheme of Petrochemicals (NSP), and the department has already approved 18 Centres of Excellence under it.

The centre aims to help build new products, newer applications and process innovations, along with environmentally sustainable technologies. It is open for applications through the official invitation, and the details are given below.

Scheme for Setting Up of Centre of Excellence

The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals runs this scheme to help existing educational and research institutions set up Centres of Excellence in the field of chemicals and petrochemicals. These centres work on updating products for new uses, improving production processes, recycling polymer technology, developing biopolymers and biodegradable polymers, and other emerging areas in the sector. The department, till date, has approved 18 Centres of Excellence at institutions such as IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, CIPET Chennai, CSIR-NCL Pune and others.

The scheme provides financial help of up to 50% of the total project cost, with an upper limit of ₹5,00,00,000, spread over a period of five years. The grant covers capital expenditure for laboratories, machinery and research staff. Applicants must be Government entities with a proven research record, and they need to submit a detailed project report for evaluation.
