Government of Maharashtra has launched Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, or MJPJAY in 2017 to provide free cashless treatment to state residents. The scheme provides free and cashless treatment facilities to all eligible state residents , so families can focus on getting better instead of stressing about hospital bills.
What is Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana?
Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana or MJPJAY was first launched on July 2, 2012, and was known as Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana. In 2017, it was renamed to honor the great social reformer, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. The main goal of this scheme is to offer quality healthcare to poor and at-risk families across all 36 districts of Maharashtra.
The scheme offers cashless treatment for a very large number of medical conditions and surgeries at a network of government and private hospitals. It acts as a safety net, helping families get critical medical care without paying from their own pocket. From July 2024, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana has been expanded to cover all families in Maharashtra, making healthcare accessible to everyone in the state.

Who is Eligible for MJPJAY?
The MJPJAY scheme is started for various groups of people in Maharashtra to make sure everyone can get medical support. To check if your family can get these benefits, you need to fall into one of the following categories:
- Category A: This includes families that have a Yellow Ration Card, an Orange Ration Card, or an Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Annapurna Ration Card.
- Category B: This group covers families with a White Ration Card and even those who do not have a ration card but have a domicile certificate of Maharashtra. This means government employees are also included.
- Category C: This is for special groups such as children living in government orphanages, students in Government Ashram Shalas, women in Government Mahila Ashrams, and senior citizens staying in government old age homes. Journalists and construction workers registered with the state board are also part of this category.
- Category D: This category is for people from outside Maharashtra or India who have a road accident within the state.
- Category E: This includes families from 865 villages in the Maharashtra-Karnataka border areas of Belgaon, Karwar, Kalburgi, and Bidar who hold specific ration cards.

What is Not Covered by MJPJAY?
Although the scheme is very wide, there are a few things that are not covered. Certain simple procedures like hernia or appendectomy are reserved only for government hospitals. Also, the scheme does not pay for cosmetic surgeries, experimental treatments, or ambulance charges. It is always a good idea to check the full list of exclusions on the official website.
MJPJAY and Ayushman Bharat Integration
Since April 2020, MJPJAY has been combined with the central government’s Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). This integration is a big step, as it has increased the health coverage amount to ₹5 lakh per family per year. This combined scheme now serves more families and covers more treatments, making healthcare even more accessible for everyone in Maharashtra.

Its a very helpful scheme for poor and needy patients. But most of the private hospitals don’t opt for it because of extremely low and delayed returns from government and also delay in sanctioning of required treatment.
