Ministry of External Affairs runs its Internship Programme every year for Indian graduates and final-year students who want to see how India's foreign policy actually works from the inside. Selected interns get an honorarium of ₹10,000 per month, one-time return airfare to Delhi, and hands-on work inside an MEA division for one to three months. Registration for each term opens on internship.mea.gov.in a few weeks before the term begins.

Two terms run every year. Term I usually goes from April to June and Term II runs October to December. Each term takes a maximum of 30 interns, with reserved seats for candidates from all states and union territories, women, TADP districts and SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories.

MEA Internship Programme 2026 - Full Details

This scheme was started by Ministry of External Affairs in 2022 with one clear aim, to take foreign policy closer to young Indians. Instead of reading about diplomacy only in textbooks, you actually sit inside an MEA division, read files, help with research and see how India talks to the world from close quarters. You also learn how MEA supports Indian citizens abroad through its consular services.

Depending on the situation during your term, you may even get a chance to visit one of India's Missions abroad. But this part is not fixed, it depends on the workload and situation at that time. Number of seats and the exact application dates for each term are announced through an official notice PDF on internship.mea.gov.in a few weeks before the term begins.

How to Apply Online for MEA Internship 2026

Application is fully online through the official portal at internship.mea.gov.in. Once MEA notifies a term, the registration window usually stays open for around two to three weeks. If you miss the window, you have to wait for the next term. Steps to apply are given below.

STEP 1 - Go to internship.mea.gov.in and open the Notice section to check the current term notification. Read the eligibility rules, seat matrix and last date carefully before starting registration.

STEP 2 - Click on the Register link and fill in your personal details like name, date of birth, email ID and mobile number. After submitting, you will get a verification link on your email from egov.egit@mea.gov.in. Click that link to activate your account.

STEP 3 - Log in with your registered email and password on internship.mea.gov.in/userlogin. On your dashboard, click the Apply button for the ongoing term.

STEP 4 - Fill in your educational details, upload scanned copies of your class 10 and class 12 mark sheets, graduation certificate or bonafide letter from college, ID proof and address proof. Choose your preferred MEA divisions carefully because you cannot change this later.

STEP 5 - Review every field once, then click Submit. Take a printout of the filled form for your records. Shortlisted candidates get a separate email with the personal interview date, which is done over video conferencing.

Benefits of MEA Internship

Money is only one part of what you take home from this internship. The bigger takeaway is the exposure to how India's external affairs actually work and the tag of a Ministry of External Affairs internship on your CV. Here is what selected interns get.

  • Monthly honorarium of ₹10,000 to cover basic expenses during the internship period.
  • One-time to-and-fro air travel between your domicile state capital or institution location and Delhi, capped at economy class fare. Boarding and lodging in Delhi has to be arranged by the intern.
  • Direct exposure to how India's foreign policy is made, how MEA handles public queries and how it supports Indian citizens abroad.
  • A completion certificate at the end of the term, which is a strong addition to your resume for higher studies, UPSC preparation or a career in international relations.

Eligibility Criteria for MEA Internship Programme

Not every student can apply. MEA has kept a clear age and education bar so that the pool stays focused on serious candidates. Check these points before you start filling the form.

  • You should be an Indian citizen. Foreign nationals and OCI card holders are not allowed.
  • You should hold a graduate degree from a recognised university, or be in the final year of graduation where an internship is a compulsory part of your course.
  • Your age should not cross 25 years as on 31 December of the internship year. So for a 2026 term, you should be below 25 as on 31 December 2026.
  • Preferred subjects of study include international relations, political science, law, economics, management and engineering, but other streams are also welcome to apply.

Priority in selection is given to candidates from Aspirational Districts under the Transformation of Aspirational Districts Programme (TADP), and to applicants belonging to SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories. A minimum of 30 per cent seats are filled by women candidates in every term.

Documents Required for MEA Internship Application

Keep scanned copies of these documents ready before you start the online form. Bad scans or wrong file sizes usually lead to rejection at the upload stage.

  • Aadhaar card or any government-issued photo ID as proof of identity.
  • Address proof such as voter ID, utility bill or passport.
  • Class 10 and class 12 mark sheets for age and academic verification.
  • Graduation mark sheet or a bonafide certificate from your college if you are still studying.
  • Passport size photograph and signature scan in the size mentioned on the portal.
  • Bank account details for the monthly ₹10,000 payment.

After selection, you also have to submit a letter from the head of your institution and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) confirming that your college is fine with your participation in the internship.

Selection Process and Seat Distribution

Selection happens in two stages. First is a preliminary screening based on marks in class 12 and graduation. Higher marks give you a better chance in the shortlist. Second stage is a personal interview held over video conferencing by a screening committee.

Seat distribution is designed so that every part of India gets represented. Out of the 30 seats per term, around 26 seats go to candidates from the 14 states put together, 2 seats are for candidates from the 4 union territories together, and 2 more seats are kept for the highest scorers from TADP districts or poor sections. This state and UT quota is what makes this scheme different from other government internships like the PM Internship Scheme.

Duties and Responsibilities of an MEA Intern

An MEA internship is not a coffee-fetching job. You will be posted to a specific division under a Head of Division who becomes your guide for the term. Your daily work includes reading policy files, writing research notes, tracking news on the countries or issues your division handles, and helping the officers prepare briefs and background papers. You should keep every piece of information you see inside the Ministry fully confidential. At the end of the term, you have to submit a final work report and may be asked to give a short presentation to the officers of your division.

Important Points to Remember

Ministry can end the internship early if the work is unsatisfactory or if you break any of the rules. You can also resign on your own by giving a one-week written notice. Boarding and lodging in Delhi is fully your responsibility, so plan for accommodation before you accept the offer letter. Also note that this internship does not give any right to a job in the Ministry of External Affairs. It is only a short-term learning opportunity.
