Illam Thedi Kalvi after the 2026 government change

Tamil Nadu got a new government in May 2026. C. Joseph Vijay of TVK was sworn in as Chief Minister on 10 May 2026, and Rajmohan is now the Minister for School Education. Illam Thedi Kalvi was started under the earlier DMK government.

New government's first full budget for 2026-27, presented on 5 August 2026, gave ₹44,527 crore to the School Education Department. Reported budget highlights did not include any separate announcement on Illam Thedi Kalvi, and no order to close, expand or rename the scheme has come out so far. Together with the inactive registration link, this means the scheme's future is not clear yet. This post will be updated when the department announces anything.

What is Illam Thedi Kalvi scheme

Illam Thedi Kalvi means education at the doorstep. Then Chief Minister M. K. Stalin launched it on 27 October 2021 at Mudaliarkuppam in Villupuram district, to cover the learning loss caused by long school closures during the pandemic. It first ran as a pilot in 12 districts and was later extended to the whole state, with an outlay of ₹200 crore.

Instead of asking children to travel, the class comes to their own habitation. Volunteers from the same locality take an hour of lessons every evening in a community hall, a temple hall, a volunteer's home or any open space the village agrees on. Sessions are activity based, so children play, talk and learn rather than sit through another school period. There is no form for students. Schools and local teams pick the children and enrol them.

At its peak the scheme had about two lakh volunteers running around two lakh centres across 92,000 habitations. Lessons then covered classes 1 to 8 in Tamil, English, Maths, Science, Social Science and Environmental Studies.

How Illam Thedi Kalvi runs now

From July 2024 the scheme was cut from about two lakh centres to around 50,000, and kept only where the need is high. Centres now run in educationally backward blocks, hilly areas, and areas with many poor and left out families. Classes are limited to primary students, so classes 6 to 8 are no longer covered in most places. Other student schemes in the state, such as the Vetri Laptop Scheme, are handled separately.

Districts where Illam Thedi Kalvi started

Twelve districts got the scheme first, for a two week trial, before it spread to the rest of Tamil Nadu. These were:

  1. Cuddalore
  2. Dindigul
  3. Erode
  4. Kancheepuram
  5. Kanniyakumari
  6. Krishnagiri
  7. Madurai
  8. Nagapattinam
  9. Nilgiris
  10. Thanjavur
  11. Tiruchirappalli
  12. Villupuram
