PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana 2026: Apply Online for Rooftop Solar Subsidy

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India scheme to promote rooftop solar across the country. The scheme replaced the earlier MNRE Rooftop Solar Power Plant Subsidy Scheme and now offers a direct subsidy up to ₹78,000 to residential households. Central government runs this scheme through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to encourage use of renewable energy and cut electricity bills.

Under this scheme, eligible people can install solar panels on their rooftops and get up to 300 units of free electricity every month. The subsidy is paid directly to the consumer's bank account after installation and verification. Apply Online for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

The central government is inviting online applications for the rooftop solar subsidy through the National Portal for Rooftop Solar. Here is the complete process to apply online for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:-

STEP 1: To apply online, the applicants need to visit the National Portal for Rooftop Solar at pmsuryaghar.gov.in and register as a consumer using a valid mobile number and email ID.

STEP 2: At the homepage, you will see the "Apply for Solar Rooftop" section as shown below:-

STEP 3: Here you can enter the name of state, district, distribution company / utility and consumer account number, then click the "Fetch Details" button so that the portal can verify your electricity connection details.

STEP 4: Then choose a registered or empanelled vendor from the list shown on the portal and place your order for the rooftop solar system. From 23 September 2026, MNRE has made consumer approval of the vendor-consumer agreement mandatory on the PM Surya Ghar portal. Consumers must log in and approve the agreement before installation can proceed.

STEP 5: After the vendor installs the system, the state DISCOM carries out an inspection and gives its approval for the rooftop connection.

STEP 6: Once the installation is verified, the central subsidy is transferred directly to your bank account through the DBT payment system.

PM Surya Ghar Subsidy Amount

The central subsidy under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana depends on the size of the rooftop solar system installed by the household. The subsidy slabs are as follows:-

Along with the subsidy, households can also take collateral-free loans of up to ₹2 lakh to cover the remaining cost of the system. On 9 October 2026, the Finance Ministry asked all banks to cut the loan processing time under the scheme to under 10 days. At present it takes 17 days at public banks and 19 days at private banks. The subsidy is paid directly to the consumer's bank account after the system is installed and verified by the DISCOM. From 22 October 2026, Gujarat is giving an additional state subsidy for residential rooftop solar systems of up to 2.18 kWp under the scheme. Under this state top-up, SC and ST households pay only 5 percent of the benchmark cost and other households pay 10 percent, and the state covers the remaining cost after the central subsidy. The Gujarat state subsidy applies only to systems commissioned on or after 22 October 2026 and is paid through DBT by the state DISCOMs.

STEP 1: To use the calculator, the applicants need to visit the National Portal for Rooftop Solar at pmsuryaghar.gov.in.

STEP 2: At the homepage, click at the "Solar Rooftop Calculator" link.

STEP 3: Afterwards, the Solar Rooftop Calculator page will appear as shown below:-

STEP 4: Here applicants can select either total rooftop area or solar panel capacity they want to install or their budget. Then select state and consumer category and the average electricity cost, then click at the "Calculate" button to calculate the price of solar rooftop installation.
