Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) is a central government scheme launched on June 9, 2016, that provides free, comprehensive antenatal care to pregnant women on the 9th of every month. The scheme completed 10 years in June 2026 and continues to offer nine assured free services at designated government health facilities across the country.

The scheme is run by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and guarantees a fixed package of antenatal care services to women in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy. Any obstetrician, radiologist or physician can join PMSMA as a volunteer.

Progress of PM Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan

As of July 2026, comprehensive antenatal care is being provided to pregnant women across the country. Here is the progress report of the PM Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan:

• Since its launch in 2016, more than 7.91 crore pregnant women have received antenatal care services under PMSMA.
• More than 1.24 crore high-risk pregnancies have been identified and tracked under the scheme.
• India's Maternal Mortality Ratio has declined from 130 per one lakh live births in SRS (2014-16) to 87 per one lakh live births in SRS (2022-24).

First trimester antenatal registration in India increased from 58.6% in NFHS-4 (2015-16) to 76.2% in NFHS-6 (2023-24). Mothers receiving four or more antenatal care visits increased from 51.2% to 65.2%, and institutional deliveries rose from 78.9% to 90.6% during the same period.

In June 2026, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched nationwide celebrations to mark "10 Years of PMSMA - A Decade of Care". A special ₹75 commemorative coin and a ₹5 postal stamp were released to mark a decade of safe motherhood under the scheme.
