About Nagaland Agricultural Department
The State Department of Agriculture was set up as a full fledged department in the year 1963, headed by the Director, with the declaration of Nagaland as the 16th state under the Indian Union. The department completed 50 years on 4th December 2013 in Kohima, Nagaland. The roots of the department go back to 1910 to early 1920, when the British Raj started agriculture as part of developmental activities and administration with a few nucleus staff called Agriculture Demonstrator and "Kheti Babus".
During 1952-62, two District officers worked under the direct control of the Secretary Development in the nascent Secretariat as DAO Kohima and DAO Tuensang. The departments of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Co-operation, Fishery, Soil and Water Conservation, Irrigation and Flood Control, Horticulture and Land Resources came out of the Department of Agriculture.
The Nagaland Agriculture Department aims to achieve food security. Natural resource based sustainable agriculture is decreasing due to the decline in the eco-system and man-made activities. So, the focus is on improving production and productivity to reach food security.
