Railway Parcel Booking Process
To book a parcel, the consignor has to either visit the parcel office of the originating station and fill in a Forwarding Note with details of the consignment, or it can be done online using below process.
Online Booking of Railway Parcels
- Go to the official parcel booking website: www.parcel.indianrail.gov.in
- Register yourself and log in to the portal.
- Enter the origin and destination stations in the online form.
- The system will show you the list of available trains – choose a suitable train.
- Fill in the Forwarding Note (booking form) with parcel details.
- The system will display the approximate freight charges.
- Submit the generated e-Forwarding Note at the parcel office or godown.
- Hand over your parcel at the originating station along with the printout of the e-Forwarding Note.
- The parcel is weighed and the actual freight charges are calculated at the booking counter.
- Pay the freight charges and collect the Railway Receipt (RR).
- Track your parcel anytime using the Track & Trace facility on the portal.
- You will also get an SMS notification when your parcel reaches the destination.
- Submit the original RR at the destination station’s parcel counter to collect your parcel.
Proper packing is mandatory so that goods can withstand handling during loading and unloading. Charges are calculated based on distance, weight, and the type of train scale (R-scale, P-scale, or S-scale). The railway issues a Parcel Way Bill (PWB) or Luggage Ticket (LT) which contains a Progressive Reference Record (PRR) number. This serves as the reference for tracking and delivery.

Parcel freight is calculated on a slab system. Charges depend on the weight of the consignment, with a minimum freight of ₹30, plus applicable GST at 5%. Delivery and Collection
Parcels usually travel in passenger trains and sometimes in dedicated parcel vans. Once the parcel reaches the destination, the consignee has to produce the original PWB or Luggage Ticket (and an e-way bill if applicable) to collect the goods.
