West Bengal Ration Card 2026 Latest Update: The state's Food and Supplies Department has announced that 63 lakh ration cards will be cancelled based on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) results. Citizens can still apply for a new ration card online at food.wb.gov.in or the NFSA Portal.

West Bengal's new government under Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari has launched a big drive to remove ineligible and fake beneficiaries from the Khadya Sathi scheme. All ration card holders whose names were removed from the voter list during the SIR process will be identified and their cards will be deleted. The deadline set by the government to complete this entire verification process is 15 June 2026.

Important Update (June 2026): The West Bengal government has ordered cancellation of 63 lakh ration cards linked to names removed from the voter list during SIR 2026. All SDOs and BDOs have been instructed to hand over voter deletion lists to Food Department inspectors for physical house-to-house verification. Cards will be cancelled upon completion. However, people who have applied for citizenship under CAA or have filed an appeal before a Tribunal will have their ration cards kept active until a final decision is made on their case.

West Bengal Ration Card 2026 - Big Changes Under New Government

A ration card is very important for every family in West Bengal. It helps households get subsidized or free food grains and also acts as a key document to access other government scheme benefits. The new Shubhendu Adhikari government has made it clear that it will clean up the entire beneficiary database to stop financial leakage from state-funded food schemes.

Right now, the central government provides subsidized food grains to 6.01 crore people in West Bengal under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). On top of this, the state government gives free food grains to an additional 2 crore people through its own Khadya Sathi scheme. The Food and Supplies Department spends around ₹15,000 crore every year just on this state-funded portion. The new government believes there has been large-scale misuse of funds in these schemes during the previous TMC government's rule, which is why physical verification of all ration card holders is now required.

63 Lakh Ration Cards to be Cancelled - What You Need to Know

Based on a formal order issued by the Food and Supplies Department, ration cards of all persons whose names were cut from the voter list during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 will be cancelled. Here is a clear breakdown of what this means for different groups of people.

  • 63 lakh people whose names were deleted in SIR - Their ration cards will be identified and cancelled immediately after house-to-house verification by Food Department officials.
  • People who applied under CAA or filed Tribunal appeals - Their ration cards will stay active until their case gets a final decision. The government has kept this provision to protect those with genuine legal proceedings pending.
  • All other Khadya Sathi beneficiaries - Physical verification has been made required for all ration card holders under the state-funded scheme. Cards found to belong to ineligible persons will be deactivated after verification.

How Will the Verification Process Work?

The government has set up a very clear process for carrying out this verification drive across the state. All SDOs (Sub-Divisional Officers) and BDOs (Block Development Officers) will hand over lists of voters whose names were removed during SIR to the local Food Department inspectors in their area. Food Department officials will then visit the homes of these people personally to check whether they are eligible. After verification is done, the ration cards of those found to be ineligible will be cancelled. The entire process has to be finished by 15 June 2026 as per instructions from the state government's top leadership.

Annapurna Yojana New Application Form

Along with the ration card cleanup, the new government has also launched a new application form for the Annapurna Yojana. Under this scheme, the West Bengal government will give ₹3,000 per month to around 2 crore women in the state. This will cost the government roughly ₹72,000 crore every year. By comparison, the previous TMC government's Laxmi Bhandar scheme cost about ₹30,000 crore per year. The state government suspects that more than 30 lakh ineligible women were getting money under Laxmi Bhandar, which is another reason for the current cleanup drive.
