Delhi government is implementing Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana in the national capital. In this CM Street Light Scheme, the state govt. will install around 2.8 lakh street lights as per revised target (earlier target was 2.1 lakh street lights) to light up dark spots. This scheme is a major step towards strengthening of women safety. The 3 DISCOMS will have the responsibility of installing these street lights.
Just like installation of CCTV cameras in Delhi, the state govt. will follow the same process to install street lights. The street lights will even be put outside people houses under Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana 2024 in Delhi. The new scheme of installation of street lights by Delhi government will bypass the role of the MCD. CM Street Light Scheme will provide solution to problems which people faces in dark stretches in the city.
Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana – Revised Target
In order to make the national capital safer for citizens, the Delhi government is set to install 70,000 streetlights across the city under “Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana”. This will be in addition to the 2.1 lakh streetlights that the government had earlier aimed to install in the city. On 18 April 2023, Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj gave his approval to the scheme to install an additional 70,000 streetlights, increasing the target from 2.1 lakh to 2.8 lakh, and directed the urban development department to complete the project within the estimated timeline, Delhi government said in a statement.
The initiative was taken after seeing the tremendous participation of the residents of Delhi under “Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana” and therefore it was decided to install an additional 70,000 street lights in different areas of Delhi, it said. The government is committed to ensuring the safety of women. In 2019, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced “Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana“. Under the scheme, the aim was to install 2.1 lakh street lights in different parts of the city and the responsibility of installing these street lights was given to three different companies. LED lights of 10, 20 and 40 Watt were to be installed under this scheme.
Currently, under the scheme, most street lights have been installed to eliminate the dark spots that the state government had planned to illuminate. In some of the areas, the work of installing these street lights is in the final stages. “Now, on the directions of CM Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi govt. have decided to install an additional 70,000 street lights in Delhi which will help in quickly eliminating all the dark spots in Delhi.
