Delhi Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana 2026 - Smart LED Upgrade to Light Up Dark Spots

Delhi government is carrying forward Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana with a fresh smart LED upgrade across the national capital. The scheme was first launched in 2019 to light up dark spots and strengthen women's safety in the city.

Under the new move, the government has approved a ₹473 crore project to replace nearly 96,000 street lights on PWD roads with smart LED systems. This is part of the 2026-27 budget commitments announced by the current government.

Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana - Smart LED Upgrade

The original Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana was announced in 2019 by Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The aim was to install 2.1 lakh street lights in different parts of the city. Later, the target was revised to 2.8 lakh street lights after an additional 70,000 lights were approved in April 2023.

Under the old scheme, 10, 20 and 40 Watt LED street lights were to be installed. The three DISCOMS of Delhi were given the responsibility for installing and maintaining these street lights. Most of the dark spots identified by the state government have already been covered, and work in some areas is in the final stages.

Now, the government under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved a new smart LED street lighting project. Nearly 96,000 existing street lights on PWD roads will be replaced with smart LED systems. The project also includes the installation of 5,000 new street light poles in uncovered and developing areas.

Smart Street Light Project - Key Details

The smart LED project was approved in a meeting of the Expenditure Finance Committee chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The new system will come with a Centralised Command and Control Centre for real-time monitoring of all street lights across Delhi.

This control centre will help authorities detect faults instantly, control street lights remotely, and adjust brightness levels up to 90%. The government expects the new LED system to save around Rs 25 crore every year in electricity costs.

Benefits of the Smart LED Upgrade

The smart LED upgrade is expected to remove dark spots on major roads, improve women's safety at night, and reduce road accidents. The new system will also make sure the whole city gets even and uniform lighting quality.

The government aims to complete the entire project before Diwali this year, so that Delhi stays fully lit during the festive season. The project is part of the broader plan to make Delhi a safer, smarter and more energy-efficient capital.

How to Request a Street Light

People can submit their requests for street lights to their local MLAs. After placing the request, the permission of the building owner is taken. Once the location survey is passed by the power company, the street light gets installed.

The building owner's household connection powers the street light. The state government observes how much electricity is needed to run one light, and the same cost is adjusted in the electricity bill. This automatic arrangement keeps the process simple for the people.

In unauthorized colonies and slum areas, there was a lack of space and the MCDs were refusing to give NOCs to set up street lights. To solve this problem, the state government launched Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana. Now only the permission of the MLA and the building owner is required to get a light installed outside a house, shop or street.

Delhi government had installed more than 1,17,000 LED streetlights across the city by August 2021. The Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) is providing technical and knowledge support to help carry out the plan.
