Madhya Pradesh government launched MP Rural Transport Scheme on 26 May 2022 at Kagpur Village in Vidisha district. Former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan started the scheme to help transporters run buses on short rural routes with government support. The scheme was meant to slowly cover the whole state.
In 2026, rural bus connectivity in Madhya Pradesh has moved to a bigger platform. The state government has approved Mukhyamantri Sugam Parivahan Seva, a new state-run bus service that will put more than 5,200 buses on urban and rural routes under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
MP Rural Transport Scheme
At the launch event of MP Rural Transport Scheme, the former CM said that although a network of roads had been laid in every village of the state, good transport services were still not available to commuters in rural areas. The state government was starting a rural transport service which would gradually be expanded to the entire Madhya Pradesh.
Buses would now run from village to village and commuters would travel comfortably. Chouhan said that transporters refrained from plying buses on short routes as they had to suffer losses. The government decided to provide them with support and facilities to run buses on these routes, so that they could earn profit. This was a unique rural transport scheme and would be extended to remote villages.
Launch of Madhya Pradesh Gramin Parivahan Seva Yojana
Former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said at Vidisha that a new rural transport service was being started. Bus operators did not run buses on these routes because they were loss-making routes. He asked youths to buy buses and said the government would support them and also give money to run those buses so that there would be no loss. He said the government was committed to the development of Vidisha and the whole of Madhya Pradesh.

Along with the launch of MP Rural Transport Scheme, the CM also presented rural transport service operation certificates to drivers.
Other Major Initiatives by Former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan
On 26 May 2022, the CM also performed bhoomi pujan of development works worth several crores. He distributed moong among students of primary and secondary classes. Chouhan also honoured shooting ball players of Madhya Pradesh who had been selected for international competition during the function. Chouhan said that the government had decided that water from Sanjay Sagar Dam would be supplied through pipeline to some villages of the region at a cost of ₹208 crore 94 lakh.
Chouhan mentioned that water would also be supplied to the downstream villages through stopdams etc. Efforts would be made to supply water to every village. Tap water would be supplied to every house under Na Jal Yojana. He said that everyone would get a pucca house. In Vidisha district, 83,719 persons would be sanctioned Pradhan Mantri Awas under Awas Plus scheme. Chouhan said that the government was making sure food, clothing, shelter, education and medicine reach people in the state. He also spoke about doubling the income of farmers and increasing the income of women of self-help groups.
Chouhan said that elections to panchayat and local bodies would be held soon in the state. In places where the election would be held unopposed, special facilities would be given by the government. Such panchayats and local bodies would get the benefit of all the schemes. Chouhan said that everyone should cooperate in the operation of anganwadi. Farmers should provide free foodgrain. Revenue and transport minister Govind Singh Rajput gave detailed information about the scheme.
Mukhyamantri Sugam Parivahan Seva 2026
Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, the old state-run bus operator, shut down in 2005 due to financial losses. This left a gap of about 21 years in government-run bus services. Private bus operators came up over time, but they mainly focused on profitable routes, leaving many villages and rural communities without a reliable mode of transport.
To fix this, the state cabinet approved Mukhyamantri Sugam Parivahan Seva and sanctioned ₹101 crore to form a holding company. The company will not own buses. It will work with private operators on a public-private partnership model, which keeps operational risks low.
The state has been divided into seven transport zones for the new service. These are Indore, Ujjain, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Sagar, Gwalior and Rewa.
- Indore zone will get 1,688 buses in the first phase, including 150 electric buses under PM e-Bus Sewa.
- Intercity routes will connect districts within Madhya Pradesh, while interstate routes will connect to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
- Buses will be equipped with IT-enabled systems, a mobile app and a real-time monitoring dashboard for passengers and operators.
Operations begin in the Indore region from July 2026. The 150 electric buses will run on 28 identified routes within Indore city and its suburban areas and will be managed by Atal Indore City Transport Service Limited. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that the service will be symbolically launched around Raksha Bandhan, with a focus on providing safe and reliable public transport for women.
District collectors, in consultation with local committees, will identify routes and coordinate with the holding company. The service will also include a cargo handling component for goods transport between cities such as Indore and Bhopal.
