Meghalaya government runs the Employees State Insurance (ESI) Scheme portal at megesis.nic.in. Under this scheme, the labour department provides social security and medical care services to all ESI beneficiaries of the state. The scheme has now been extended to cover all districts of Meghalaya with effect from 1 April 2026, which is a big step for workers across the state.

Many labourers who belong to the poor and left out sections of society are not aware of the ESIC benefits available to them. So the state government launched this ESI Scheme portal at megesis.nic.in to spread information and make it easier for eligible workers to apply. ESIS Meghalaya is a many-sided social security scheme for the welfare of the labour class and weaker sections, and people under it can get two types of benefits, cash benefits and medical benefits.

The Employees State Insurance Scheme (ESIS) Meghalaya was implemented from September 1980 in the Shillong area and was extended to Byrnihat in May 2005. With the latest move, the scheme now covers all districts of the state from 1 April 2026.

Meghalaya ESIS Scheme Cash and Medical Benefits

Under the ESI Scheme, labourers are entitled to 2 types of benefits, cash and medical benefits. Cash benefits include the following.

  • Sickness Benefit, Extended Sickness Benefit and Enhanced Sickness Benefit for workers who fall ill and lose wages.
  • Maternity Benefit for women workers during pregnancy and after childbirth.
  • Dependent Benefit for the family in case of death due to employment injury.
  • Disablement Benefit and Funeral Benefit for workers and their families.

All these cash benefits are administered by the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) through their local offices in Shillong and Byrnihat. Medical benefits are provided to insured persons through dispensaries set up by the state government. There are 361 establishments covered under the Shillong ESI Dispensary and 132 establishments covered under Byrnihat. The beneficiaries get reasonable medical, surgical and obstetric treatment as per the live list made by the Regional Office of the ESI Corporation.

Any insured person along with his family members can get medical benefits, and there is no ceiling on the expenditure of treatment. Medical care is also provided to retired and permanently disabled insured persons or their spouses on payment of a token annual premium of Rs 120.
