Swamitva Yojana registrations in Madhya Pradesh to go ahead after government accepts patwaris' demand

Registrations for Swamitva Yojana in Madhya Pradesh are stuck after talks between the state government and groups representing patwaris and tehsildars failed on September 19, 2026. Both groups disagree with their assigned roles in the property registry process because they worry about future legal trouble.
Objections raised
Patwaris do not want to be listed as executors in property deeds. They fear legal trouble if a land registry is challenged in court. They want the government to run registries in its own name. Tehsildars, who act as registry officers, say the government should use the existing department of stamps and registration for this work. They also worry about being named in ownership disputes, especially when multiple heirs contest a registry.
Government accepts patwaris' demand
On 21 September 2026, Revenue Minister Karan Singh Verma said registries under the scheme will now be done in the name of the government instead of patwaris. He said the revenue department principal secretary has been consulted and the problems faced by patwaris in the registration process will be removed. The free registration drive in the state runs from 17 September to 17 October 2026.
