Tamil Nadu expands Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to Classes 6-8

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay launched the expansion of Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to students of Classes 6 to 8 on September 22, 2026. This extension covers 15.30 lakh additional students in 15,454 government and government-aided schools. State government also supports college students through digital education projects like Vetri Laptop Scheme.

Financial allocation and implementation

State government allocated an additional ₹217.63 crore for this expansion, making the total scheme budget ₹724 crore. Meals come from integrated kitchens in cities and from self-help groups in 12,857 rural schools. The rollout does not include Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts for now because of the Model Code of Conduct in force for upcoming by-elections.
